I'll cut out the unnecessary words for you. R1 hasn't been worth listening to since they got rid of Dave Leet[*] Travis! I turned into a R4 addict, with the odd dash of World Service. Thank goodness for podcasts, and listen again. (I'm out of reception range here...) I appreciate that R1 has a listenership of teenagers and weird adults, but for mainstream pap music they are perfectly well served by commercial stations. Maybe R6 for some off the wall odd music, but why are the tax payers paying prats[+] a fortune to waffle inanely between bad tunes? Let advertisers do that! (And breathe...) Iain. [*] That was a type, but I'm leaving it in. [+] Back on topic!

For me I listen to him on the way to work. only because he is the best of a bad bunch (compared to local BBC stations) and he's midly funny. I can't listen to commerical radio stations as to be honest the adverts do my nut in.
As barmey as a sack of badgers Dude, if I knew what I was doing in life, I'd be rich, retired, dating a supermodel and laughing at the rest of you from the sidelines.

Agree on that one! :)

In fact understandanding spoken English is troublesome for me. For instance, watching the BBC International TV channel is a pain. :sigh:

Birmingham!! Nooooooooooo!! How very dare they. Still, I'll try it out on the way home. :)

Just wondering how many of you listen to Radio 1 with Chris Moyles and like him? Personally I find that he talks too much, unfunny and just generally completely irritating. I would rather cut my own fingers off with a penknife then have to listen to him every morning, but then again there are people who absolutely love him and think that he fully justifies his £650,000 a year salary. Any thoughts? :)

Why don't you write about someone you like to listen to? Or at least write a real rant about Mr. Moyles, his groupies, or his salary?

My initil reaction was yes, I like him, but then I thought alittle more and realised I don't listen to him very often. On a related side-note, Comedy Dave just isn't.

According to Wiki; "The station is based in Lionel Street in the city of Birmingham near to the BT Tower, and it broadcasts from the Sutton Coldfield transmitter, covering a wide area including Warwickshire, Derbyshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire and Leicestershire." The breakfast show is good, especially the last hour when they just shut up and play music (apart from the obvious adverts). Stuart Cable used to be good until he died, not so much now. Kate Lawler (Big Brother winner) does the drive show, and I'm guessing if Sara Cox does your head on you are not going to get on with her.

Never heard of him but don't really listen to radio, the rare time I do I find something on shoutcast. I'd maybe watch music TV every so often if I had sky/cable but I don't like any of the music channels on freeview. I disagree with the whole principal of license/tax funded broadcasting though. 650k sounds high but I suppose it's OK if the show generates way more than that in revenue, etc. Hard to tell though when the government basically forces you to subscribe to it by law.

Because I was intrigued as to why he pulls in 6 million listeners a day, when as far as I'm concerned he's just an annoying idiot. I thought that maybe I was missing a hidden joke some where - or if you interpret things he says in another way then maybe it becomes funny. Besides which, it was never meant to be a rant, I don't hate the guy - like I said in the topic - merely a quick poll.

[My articles]Your written English is good though! And I can understand the problem with spoken English - we don't all speak like Hugh Grant - and there are soo many local accents. I used to live in a flat with some Dutch guys, who could speak and understand English very well, but when watching films had to have the subtitles on. :)

I agree, Radio 4 is rather good - they do have some really interesting programmes on to do with science, philosophy, current affairs... But don't listen to it all the time. Haven't tuned into the World Service before...

I can recommend it - especially the news. It's interesting to see just how little UK news makes it onto the world service. Gives you a sense of perspective! Iain.

I can easily read technical English and write it. I suppose my spoken English is very ugly but still I can formulate meaningful sentences. On the other hand understanding spoken Englis is troublesome, believe me. :)

I haven't listened to Radio 1 since 1975 and I'm not about to start again. [edit] in case anyone's interested I'm quite a Radio 4 addict but also listen to a lot of the oldy-goldy comedy stuff on Radio 7[/edit]

Once I had to deal with a taxi driver in Glasgow. That wasn't English! I supposed he was just using another language (while in Scotland's B&B I always found people with very good pronunciation). :)
