It has come to a point where it is intolerable and everytime they get wet they smell like burnt chemicals. If I could just remove this coating off of my glasses I would be able to see better. I need to be able to do it with in house ingredients, I can't go out and buy anything. I need a serious answer please, I am blind without my glasses.

And ask them for advice – it will be free. The coating could be just a scratch protection but also could be a part from the lenses. They also could have a machine for polishing that could solve your problem for a small fee/not very likely but wonders happen/. At least you will know your options for saving your current or for purchasing new lenses from a professional rather than the Internet.

That just happens with time, I'm not sure there's anything you can do, apart from buy new glasses. Given that you have limited income, surely your national health scheme will supply you with a basic pair of new glasses ? By the time that coating comes off, you should be getting new glasses anyhow, at your age, your eyes stand a good chance of changing with time, so your prescription will have changed.

They have an anti-glare/anti-reflective coating and I'm pretty sure they also have an anti-scratch coating on them. They are 300 dollar lenses, placed in 200 dollar titanium frames. I've had them for nearly 6 years now I wear them everyday. The coatings or possibly even the lenses are reacting to something when they get wet.

that is your problem. I don't mess up with my precious eyes, I get them checked every year. My Ophthalmologist checks my glasses to make sure everything is ok. If you can't afford doctors visit, then you should live in socialist state so you can get it for free :doh: :sigh:

I'm thinking about getting contacts instead. Fifteen bucks a month or so isn't that bad and I can skip out on some days if I need to.

I use disposable contact lenses. If you have astigmatism as well as being short sighted ( or long sighted, but I'm short sighted ), I found that the lenses that correct for that are not reliable, they would slip in my eye and my vision would blur. I use lenses only to go to concerts, where I'll be packed into a tight crowd. For example, I had my glasses ripped off my head by falling bodies at Rock on the Range, over and over again. The thing to remember is, it IS an ongoing cost. You never stop paying, unlike glasses. They also can not be great for your eyes, my optomitrist recommends using lenses as I use them, not for every day use, and always with glasses as a backup, b/c there are days your eyes just won't take them.

You could try buying a pair of glasses for Zenni Optical[^]. I bought a pair of glasses for $8 (US) and shipping was 4.95. My son got a pair of tranisition lens glasses for less than $50. Quality is okay definitely won't take alot of abuse. But it could tide you over until your able to buy another pair.

I do have astigmatism and I can't see close up or far away. Astigmatism really isn't an issue though, or at least it's not severe.

OK - well, I'd recommend getting the lenses that don't correct for it then, if you get lenses at all. They are just more reliable, b/c they can sit on your eye in any direction, otherwise they have a top and a bottom and they can spin and you can be worse off.

6 years is far too long a time to use the same prescription eye glasses. Go get your eyes tested. If you have an older pair of spectacles, go take your troublesome pair to be factory re-coated. In the photocopier industry, ZIRCONIUM OXIDE in SUSPENSION, is used to polish away blemishes to certain types of photoreceptive drums such as As2Se3 drums. The zirconium oxide powder when wet has a mild abrasive action. Use at your risk, but if you do, also use a lint-free material to apply the mixture with a fine small circular motion until it dries, then dust off with a clean lint-free material, repeat as necessary. That will, eventually, have the effect of grinding away some of the coating. Because the zirconium oxide is a fine powder, it should not harm your glass underneath the coatings. Alternately, look for "Jeweller's Rouge" or "Optician's Rouge" both do the same kind of thing as Zirconium Oxide.

I also have astigmatism and have been wearing contacts for 35 years and the only time I ever had an issue with orientation is when I try to wear them too long and my eyes dry out. I usually put them in right before I leave for work and take them out when I get home. That seems to work well. If I try to wear them until ten or even midnight regularly then I need to use eye drops of they get uncomfortable and blurry. This year I decided to give my eyes an extended rest from wearing them, which lasted about 6 months. When I began wearing them again recently, my eyes felt noticeably better.

But acids is a completely different thing, I'm afraid you have removed the expensive coating of your glasses. Then the question is if your glasses are glass or plastic? If they are plastic that would explain the smell. Acid and plastic is another fail.
