notebook only

I decided to use the same computer at home and at office (that means all day long): a notebook. What do you thing about this? (My employer accepted to buy me a notebook for exclusive use only if I give to someone else my desktop, and my home desktop is a little too old for .NET, so I decided to give it to my daughter) Is a notebook able to work 8-16 hours daily? And Megan, what was your decision between the dell and the fujitsu-siemens? (myne was a compaq evo n800v :)) Cheers, stefan bornuz

Two of my colleagues are doing it now. Seems to be working great. One uses a Toshiba Satellite and the other uses an HP. Thomas My article on a reference-counted smart pointer that supports polymorphic objects and raw pointers

Go for it! I started doing that about 4 years ago. I only use notebooks now for development. Being a consultant, I love going to a coffee house and working. Just today, I went to Harry Potter 2 with my son and got in 45 minutes of work while we sat in the movie theatre waiting for the movie to start and my son talked with a couple classmates he met there! I have a two desktop machines, but only because my client bought them for me to test out the software I write for them. Marc Help! I'm an AI running around in someone's f*cked up universe simulator.

Nice, I have a Compaq Evo N800C, it's really a great laptop - Anders Money talks, but all mine ever says is "Goodbye!"

stefan b wrote: Is a notebook able to work 8-16 hours daily? At home I have both a desktop and a notebook, but while in college (8 months a year) I only use my laptop. Altough I rather work long periods of time in a desktop, with a little rest every now and then, a laptop is confortable. Just get an optical USB mouse. That's a must! I have a Sony Vaio PCG-R505JS. The nice part about it is that I undock it from its base to take it to school, and it's much ligther! Just the built-in speakers are not that good, but that can be fixed with external speakers. stefan b wrote: Is a notebook able to work 8-16 hours daily? For a programmer? I wouldn't. I've got a Fujitsu-Siemens E-series Lifebook and I've never really been impressed with it. My suggestion, is get a very ordinary notebook and a decent desktop at work. Using a notebook all day is a pain because: - the screen is not as good as my Samsung SynchMaster 950p at home (makes reviewing my dig. photos really awkward) - no great graphics/sound card - still have to take my mouse and k/board along Cheers, Simon "From now on, if rogue states want to buy weapons of mass destruction, they're going to have to go on eBay," Mr. Bezos said.

I've got a Dell Inspiron 8200 (2Gig Intel with Geforce4 Go and lots of RAM)... and I love it. I use it at work fro programming.... and took it today to a LAN party earlier today in Charlotte where it outperformed many of the hardcore gamer PC's many of that crowd lugged into the room. It was pouring down rain and these guys were lugging in their desktop PC's with their 19 and 21 inch monitors for a day of gaming... I walked in with my Targus backpack, pulled out my laptop, and started fragging. Everyone stared. It was cool. You can totally get by on a laptop these days... just be prepared for a couple facts: 1) For the most part other than memory and a new hard drive (a NEW, not additional hard drive), you basically have no upgrade options. No new CPU's (in most cases) and no new graphics processors. 2) They simply don't last like a good desktop. It's not necessarily that they aren't made well (though most aren't)... it's the nature of them being portable.

Got the Dell in the end - and haven't regretted it for a second! I named it "The Beast" - describes it well. :-D I love it, every second of working on it! One thing I would recommend to anyone - install XP Pro on it for maximum working pleasure (laptop or desktop). :jig:

Notebooks are great to work on. Even in the office. But there are a few things you must take care of: - make a complete HD backup at least once a week. If you don't you'll regret it (I know what I'm talking about, believe me:( ). Laptop HD's don't have a very high MTBF (mean time between failure) and can fail (happened to mine - complete data loss). Also even if the manufacturer tells you that the HD will work 4 or more years then keep in mind that these values are calculated with a usual uptime (for laptops) of only 2 to 4 hours a day! - a laptop can get damaged if you let it drop. - Laptops often get lost on airports. If that happens not only your data is gone but also in danger that someone else might use/read it.

stefan b wrote: Is a notebook able to work 8-16 hours daily? Mine has been doing it for over a year now. I bought the Dell 8100(I think it is an 8200 now) Best machine I have ever owned. I don't think I will ever go back to a desktop, I would hate to lose the flexibility. Ed Atwell never let your studies get in the way of your education.

That's how I decided to do it. I could never get the hang of synchronising everything between a notebook and desktop (and the 'My Briefcase' never quite cut the mustard) so I decided on 1 good laptop instead of an OK laptop and a good desktop. My old Dell 450MHz is now 3 years old and still runs perfectly (though noisily) and my new Compaq Evo 800c will hopefully be the same. I have a 19" monitor and external keyboard/mouse/speakers and it's just like having a desktop - except that I can unplug it, take it to a meeting/home/another country and I have all my work with me, with no sync hassles. cheers, Chris Maunder

ah yes - I forgot to mention the coffee shop advantage. Especially if you and the coffee shop are both WiFi enabled :D cheers, Chris Maunder

Works pretty well, assuming you buy a notebook that's a desktop replacement. I used a Dell 8500 for a couple of years at my last job, because I worked from home 2-3 days of the week. A friend of mine just bought a souped up Gateway, but I prefer Dells and IBMs. Btw, when I worked from home, I connected the laptop to my monitor, keyboard and mouse via a KVM. I never used the laptop on battery power for any serious work. Also, everything I did was eventually backed up to the network. /ravi Let's put "civil" back in "civilization" http://www.ravib.com ravib@ravib.com
