A project for you all!

OK - we had a bit of a talk about getting you guys and girls onboard to add the features that you really want. With the current poll on the size of the .NET redistributable, I was thinking that what we need is a competition for everyone to guess the size of the final redestributable. I'm *sure* (in other words I haven't asked and have no real idea) that MS would be glad to offer some freebies for the comp - but to get it going I need the scripts. So, who would like to try their hand at writing an ASP script that allows a person to enter in their bet (to the nearest byte) and then store the persons ID and bet in a DB. We would then need another page that allows you to view all bets (or just the bets within a given range of guesses). I will hook the scripts up to the main databases, scripts and headers - just leave me some stubs that I can tie into easily. A CodeProject T-shirt (yes, I have the first 12 printed!) to the first person who sends me a version that I can use. If you want to get together then that's cool (max 3 t-shirts per group). The contest will run from whenever we get the scripts to whenever we have a confirmed report of the size. This could be tricky and I fully expect some serious cheating - but that's half the fun. Any takers? cheers, Chris Maunder

Do we have to make it in VB script, or is JScript ok? - Anders Money talks, but all mine ever says is "Goodbye!"

JScript is fine. It may even make it easier to port over to C#. Wow - the flood of excited potential script writers has been stunning ;) cheers, Chris Maunder

Sounds interesting but I'm only starting out with ASP so I wouldn't stand a chance in a race! If there wasn't a time limit it would be more appealing to my overworked and none too big cranial cavity! Cheers, Stravaiger Le gach deagh dhurachd

Hi Chris, I keep seeing you post the odd message about visiting MS and the I remembered the old joke: A guy interviews three accountants for a job as FD. He asks each the usual questions about accounting .. and then the curveball: "What is 1 and 1?" The first interviewee says "Easy, 2.". The MD says "I'll let you know" (usual subtext) The second one says "Ah, trick question: I'll say 11.". MD: ROFL. The last one says "What sort of figure did you have in mind?". MD: "When can you start?" Al. PS: Just been to the 2001 MSDN Summer Roadshow in MS UK. I really enjoyed it - not too much depth going on - they said that they had to rewrite their ppt files daily as features kept disappearing and reappearing on a daily basis. Each presenter seemed to have a different build of the BETA2 (yes Beta two). One presenter found a cutey: a piece of demo code that was underlined with a blue wavey line, a la Word 97/2000 (no smart tags yet!). When he held the cursor over it, it said this function has been superceeded and is now obsolete and this is only beta 2! ATL Student

What sort of figure did you have in mind LOL! Nice one. Who were the presenters at the MSDN roadshow? All MS guys or third party trainers and speakers? I'm surprised that they are presenting beta 2 stuff this early - but on the other hand even more surprised that beta 2 is still not locked down (they release it in just over a week!) cheers, Chris Maunder

Glad you liked it! The presenters were a combination of MS and outside: (in no particular order) Matthew Stephen (systems engineer) (very good, very funny) John Plummer (Systems Engineer) Tim Smith (ditto) Nicolas Page (ditto) Simon Thurman (ditto) John Sharp (ContentMaster Ltd) Alex McMann (Ditto) Any you know? Each of the presenters had a VS suite as expected and each had beta 2 on the flash screens (and they were referred to as beta two's). More than one commented that features kept appearing and disappearing with the weekly builds whilst they were writing the presentations. Several demos failed for no apparent reason. Al.
