And then fix up logging and remember to unplug the FTP server that allows anonymous access by default. Then turn off FP extensions. I must say Apache is perhaps better when coming to traditional web task whereas IIS does the part as an application server better. I run both Apache and IIS, because XP's IIS after SP1 only allows 2 concurent downloads (in my case anyways) , so I run apache for file sharing (reinstall is much easier, just copy conf file) and have IIS free for web developement. Also , Apache (1.3) uses only about 1.5mb memory (peaking at 4mb and only using 1 second CPU power over the last 12 hours! and it has been serving the whole day), so it doesnt bother my system in the least. Both servers are pretty darn stable. I'd say there is little or no difference between them two in stability. Judging something to be "better" is very subjective. First, you need to know what "good" is. If good is
- .NET-capable
- Optimum performance on Windows
then IIS is probably the better alternative. But if you want
- optimum performance on UNIX and UNIX-like operating systems
- maximum configurability
- maximum extensibility (you have the source you know)
then Apache is probably the better alternative. LeppieRulesvariable.I also encountered the concurrent download limit when using Windows XP's IIS, and installed Apache to give it a try. Later I switched back to Windows 2000, but kept Apache because it was so easy to use and configure. Plus, it didn't have any weird restrictions, and I didn't need to do anything that required IIS (ASP, application web development, etc.; I'm really clueless when it comes to anything of that sort). It does everything I need it to do for the moment, so I don't think I'll switch back any time soon :)
