Anyone getting tired of todays video games?

Plants vs. Zombies, great game. Ten bucks through Steam. A no-brainer (that will sound funny once you've played the game by the way.)
I have it too :P Completed it twice (all 50 levels) xD Very creative , some people dedicate allot of time to that game for "level based tactics" xD Thanks again :-D ... Its good to know allot of people on here recognise these kind of games !

Then I recommend MASM. This game also has unlimited levels, but tends to be a bit more abstract and generally harder. Too bad I did not have time to play it in quite a while :)
A while ago he asked me what he should have printed on my business cards. I said 'Wizard'. I read books which nobody else understand. Then I do something which nobody understands. After that the computer does something which nobody understands. When asked, I say things about the results which nobody understand. But everybody expects miracles from me on a regular basis. Looks to me like the classical definition of a wizard.
Still too much for my processor, I guess ill have to stick with http://compsoc.dur.ac.uk/whitespace/[^]

You do not mean "i.e.". You mean "e.g.". Since 95% of people don't know what "i.e." means, we're better off writing "for example" instead. What you have written is equivalent in programming terms to saying "the only game on the market is Medal of Honor 2010", which sounds pretty silly since you just got done referring to "a lot of games on the market". I can't expect most people to understand the difference, but programmers at least ought to be able to get it!
Maybe 95% of people you know don't understand "i.e." but around 95% of us university students do. No need to pick through my comments to make your self think you understand "basic comprehension", maybe if I didn't reveal my age you would had stayed in your basement. ... And yes Braid is a great game so try and stick on topic instead of characterising my words. :-D

Definitely have to recommend Total Annihilation. Fun game. I'd also have to recommend a couple of other classics that even with age are fun: 1) XCom: UFO Defense[^] - Great game. Turn based squad strategy game. Kill aliens, throw grenades, and save civilians. What's not to like? 2) Master of Orion II: Battle of Antares[^] - Space empire strategy game. Lots of options and tactics available and a new universe each time, makes for high replay factor. 3) Battlefield 2[^] - Much like its successors, FPS with well rounded solid gameplay and well done mechanics. You don't need the top of the line machine to run it and the community is shrinking, but it's still a good solid game.
Some good games there, oddly enough.... "Battlefield 2" - I personally think is a great game! Its fun, can be competitive and was regularly updated and patched but best of all it was PC only! ... Sadly the other BF games only consider "console based ports" :( Thanks !

Have you tried MineCraft out? Pretty fun from all reports. Portal 2 should be something different again. All the Monkey Island games are getting re-released. I highly recommend them. Although perhaps it is just the nostalgia making them fun. And some other games I've heard are good: Touch football (aussie style of course), squash, field hockey, indoor cricket, chess, go. Also go-fish or any card game with a three year is one of the funnest games possible.

Looks good, just watched the "roller coaster video" - Quite impressive for a small game!

One game I certainly am looking forward for, lots of cool features and logical thought! Thanks :-D

It has nothing to do with your age. You either understand the usage or you don't. If you do, then you used it wrong. If you don't, then take the time to learn. Those who read Code Project, of all people, should understand syntaxy things like this. Since so many people get it wrong, I addressed the whole community, not just you. It's not just a nit. It can lead to incorrect application behavior. e.g. and i.e are both used very frequently in software specification documents. If you write "the user can pick a color, i.e. red, yellow or blue", then you have just provided a complete list of colors, and none others are allowed.

I think the newer games are just fantastic and that the real problem is that cheaters ruin the games, both online and offline. Think about how much fun it was to play Half Life (insert your favorite user tunable game name here) before you learned about the console commands. One cannot un-bite the apple. The cheaters have ruined the wonderful simplicity of Halo online. Think about how nice it would be to have an online racing game that actually punished the “crashers”. I mean punishment for those people who know that it doesn’t cost them anything to ruin the game for others. Yeah, IMHO, the games are just GREAT, but the people are just …. Well, they are just “people”, and that is always a problem. :((
Yeh those darn hackers! :-D

Me and my friends still play Total Annihilation[^] occasionally. If your only 19 you may never have heard of it. It's a top down isometric RTS. It's got a kind of 3d physics though for the missiles and explosions. It's network code is a bit sketchy, so we only really play when we meet up for an old style "LAN party". (LAN party's were what we had back in the old day before the inter-tubes were invented.) The great thing about it though is that although it's over 10 years old, they had the foresight to make the resolution scale up to whatever your running, so it still looks all right on a new pc with a nice high res screen.
Simon
The creator of Total Annihilation went on to make Supreme Commander and Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance, which I think are great successors, especially if you find good mods (I liked Uberhack for TA, and SupCom:FA needs fixes for AI I think.) (Though Supreme Commander 2 is the Star Trek V of the franchise -- I pretend it didn't happen.) Here's a gameplay video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uD5APeLebTE[^] My 2 favorite all time games: TA/SupCom (I consider them one franchise) and netrek. Like the OP I also lament the state of the game industry and a few weeks ago left my job to take a shot at making games full time! Hopefully I can inject enough of my ideas to make it creatively worthwhile and also make a living.

I am 19 so a lot of the games on the market i.e. "Medal Of Honour 2010" is aimed at my age group however... I think most games today (console and pc) just tend to annoy me , for example the "Call Of Duty" series: *Since Call of Duty Treyarch Series it went down hill, only the engine is updated but each increment game tends to become even more dumbed down (crosshair gets bigger, less recoil on guns, easier AI, infact by COD MW2 they removed the "Infinite spawning AI" completly)... *Graphics improve for mostly useless (my opinion) factors such as huge explosion effects that may had taken a month or so to direct when they could had improved in game bugs or just made it more authentic? *Large focus on multi player (actually CODMW2's multi player lobby's and such were very good apart from no dedicated servers!) tends to make allot of money for game developers , so much that they "glorify" endless 1990's death match style games to "reward" the player with game mechanic changing perks (such as better weapons) *The "Arcade" feel increases throughout... *I get 12 year old's shout verbal abuse at me for defeating them! (there is no more honour :( ) Other games such as GTAIV and even some modern racing games PGR4 are nothing new any-more, just improved eye candy but the game play is the same as before and in many cases (such with GTAIV) gets dumbed down and focuses on making it as linear and mainstream as possible! Sure I may had enjoyed these spoken games four 3or more hours but many take them to a new level of "game addiction"... And because of it more and more garbage games are released on the market and nothing really exciting is coming out either - I feel doomed! Just to show that I am not some fan boy having a rant, the game "Brink" coming out soon looks good, but I can guarantee absolutely no new content from it. I watched some videos of it and saw a feature that allows you to do some impressive "environmental interactive" abilities such as "Jump over a trap" or "slide under some obstacle" - Hasn't "Mirrors Edge" and other games owned this already? I now focus on "Indy" games such as "Defence Grid" and "Briad" as they offer something "new". :P
Today's games focus more on eye candy than original story or gameplay. That's why I don't miss having little time for games anymore. Just a few games catch my attention. Yet, there are countless old games I'd love to play again. To me, the best game I ever played was Reunion[^] And there are a lot of other old games that were great, like Prince of Persia, Battletoads, Tie Fighter and many others. Here is a good list[^] recently published in CodeProject daily news. Enjoy ;)

Yeah, BF2 is by far my favorite FPS (and I definitely get what you're saying about the others). Aside from it, the only other FPS game that I've enjoyed as much would be Day of Defeat (the old Half-Life version, not the new one).

First there was Space War, Galaga, Crazy Climber, TRON, and Luna Lander. Then there was the original Tomb Raider, original Sim City, original Mech Warrior, and FF7. Hmmm, apart from FF7 it was always the original version of a game that was great, not the later versions. I guess that tends to support the original assertion.

Yeh those darn hackers! :-D
I have absolutely NO problem with the hacker who spent his time devising the patch, the aimbot, or whatever intellectual nicety they came up with! That is innovative behavior and I would be totally hypocritical to disparage that WORK. What I DO have a problem with is when little Johnny or Suzie, who got the hack from a torrent, is immediately able to blow my head off as I WASD myself purple! The little Johnny’s and Suzie’s of the world need to be put back inside of the fences! Perhaps the solution resides in capitalism! Perhaps the Hacker should present their work to the publisher and be PAID to NOT release the work! Yes, I do like my pie with a little sky on the side! :-D

The problem today is that gaming is being treated more like bloody hollywood. So little time is spent on the plot, the gaming strategy... more on flashy fluff. Thank god we have heroes like Chris Jones from www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk The days of the good old point and click adventure games are not over! :D Who here doesn't remember enjoying Monkey island and Leisure suite Larry? Oh well... as long as the game producers are making money, why would they change?

Many, many years ago a good friend and I had a hilarious afternoon on his old Commodore or Atari or something (I forget exactly what it was). It was a stupid little game where you had blocky biplanes and a barn in the middle of the screen. There were a few clouds too. The planes started at opposite ends of the screen and you took off - pull back too quickly and you flipped over, too slow and you crashed into the barn. Then you had a dogfight in the clouds. The graphics were crap - but we played for hours, pissing ourselves laughing (we weren't drunk!). It was brilliant in its infantile simplicity. I've never seen another computer game since that could reduce me to tears of laughter...!
Are you talking about Blue Max? What an awesome game! As someone on the wrong side of his 30's, it's nice to see a 19 year old who has realised that a lot of the modern video game industry is just milking as much money from consumers as possible. But I would urge people to look beyond the block busters, games like World Of Goo, Geometry Wars, Trials HD, Osmosis are modern games which I think are just as good as Elite, Rocket Ranger, etc. of the 80's and 90's.

It's true, some of those games were good. I have an original arcade Space Invaders. Any of you who have played Space Invaders are probably aware of the UFO strategy, whereby you count your laser shots to obtain maximum points on each UFO hit (300 is the max). I lay down the challenge to anyone here to deduce the UFO point algorithm by hitting the UFO with each laser shot in order. i.e. hit a UFO with your first laser shot, hit the next UFO with your second laser shot, etc. (Do not hit any invaders with any shot). It's very difficult. I've done it. You are allowed to cheat by restarting at any time. e.g. Once you've figured out the value of the first and second shots, if you hit an invader with your third shot, you can restart the game and waste your first 2 shots (or hit invaders with them) to quickly get to the third shot. Report back once you figure out the UFO point scheme, and can reverse engineer the code in any language of your choice (hint: use a hash table for the shot values.) :-) I bring this up partly to brag, and partly to agree with the OP that it's more interesting to put less time into making explosions and more time into mind-challenging game play.
22 shots, hit saucer = 300 points 14 shots, hit saucer = 300 points 14 shots etc... We used to say that if you didn't get your extra life on the first level, don't bother.

Hello venomation Welcome to the reality! You have played the games and are bored. It's a good thing. I went the same route years ago. I was sitting in front of my AMIGA (you probalby have never seen such a machine), besides me a bunch of 31/2" floppys, and wondering "What am I spending my time with?????". You heard the names of the games from the other comments in this thread. Go out, rent a garage to make music, found your own company or something and use your intellect to create your future. Don't waste your youth with games. I know I sound like your father (which I could be when looking only at my age). Don't fear the world without games. It's not boring. Regards zuiopl

I got tired of a lot of games some years ago. Doom was okay for ten minutes but never held any long term fascination, most games today are simply improved versions. My tip is get a Wii. Nintendo appear to have worked out that many polygons do not a good game make, everything is much more basic but the time has clearly been spent on gameplay. online Mario Kart just keeps me coming back.
