Does the avg. user need Java installed? I'm sure a few niche websites using applets might crash and burn but for the majority of users WTF is Java even used for anymore? The stupid thing seems to update every week.

Martin County Florida Clerk of Court's website requires it. I don't mind. Very useful site.

Need custom software developed? I do custom programming based primarily on MS tools with an emphasis on C# development and consulting. I also do Android Programming as I find it a refreshing break from the MS. "And they, since they Were not the one dead, turned to their affairs" -- Robert Frost

Yeah it's really invasive, the .net framework never seems invasive at all by comparison. I avoid the java runtime now like the plague.

Much to many peoples' shagrin, the DoD has recently developed two major Intelligence applications (desktop apps, not web apps) using Java. So you need the VM installed and then the app will run. Ug! To make matters worse, we (someone else in the org, not me!) have to figure out how to interface a .NET application with a Java API that one of the applications exposes.

Saying Java is great because it works with all platforms is like saying anal sex is great because it works with all genders.

To Java, or not To Java... That is the question! Whether 'tis nobler in the browser to suffer The crashes and failures of faulty coding, Or to rise up against a sea of horrible applets, And by blocking, end them.

Uninstalled JAVA a few years ago and haven't missed it a bit. Of course, I am above average - just ask my mom. YS

We have used an applet since Java 1.1 for the last 10 years. 99% of the applet code is still 1.1 compatible, but the server code has followed the update path. It has worked through all browsers: IE 4.0 - 8.0, Netscape 4.x-Firefox 3.6.x, Safari, etc. It has worked through all OSes: Windows 95-Windows 7, Mac OS X, Linux, etc. It has worked through all client JVM updates: Old Microsoft JVM, Sun 1.1-1.7 The 1.1 plugin and higher allows nice interaction between Java and Javascript, so it integrates nicely into the hosting site. The newest plugins allow direct manipulation of the browser DOM! It would probably work on the iPhone and iPad if Apple would let Java roll out there. It has probably saved us 100 man years of wasted maintenance to support all of the browser/OS variations listed above. It just works...

I make use of the java runtime to play online chess. What I don't get is that Sun's Java implementation is something like 90Mbytes when installed, however, microsoft's implementation only used to be roughly 5Mbytes. Also, the font rendering in Sun's Java are shite compared to Microsoft's.

I find that unfortunately there a lot of apps that are used on the internet.  I watch the little circle around the coffee cup and sigh when I see it.
