How do you come up with your projects' names? Seriously, I have lots of ideas that go to waste just because I can't find a name...

I did one titled "MaybeThisTimeEh", it worked on the first compile and the support staff were in a rush so I had to release it as was (internally only). It's quite funny when you hear support staff using the phrase "maybe this time eh" over the phone. I offered to rename it but they won't. Embarrassing but funny.

Prepare to put mustard on those words, for you will soon be consuming them along with this slice of humble pie, that comes direct from the oven of shame, set at gas mark 'egg on your face'.

I always look for something that can be used as a good, short namespace with about three letters. My current namespace in a (private) project is FoC. While playing a game, one of the characters appeared with the line 'Forces of chaos, bow to me!'. 'Forces of Chaos' was a great name for the project in a direct sense (using evolutionary algorithms) and in a sarcastic sense (regarding the people involved), so it stuck.

A while ago he asked me what he should have printed on my business cards. I said 'Wizard'. I read books which nobody else understand. Then I do something which nobody understands. After that the computer does something which nobody understands. When asked, I say things about the results which nobody understand. But everybody expects miracles from me on a regular basis. Looks to me like the classical definition of a wizard.

My favorite name for my test or prototype projects in any platform is 'Codename Xero'. And we always have a code name for our project, some living examples are 'Mark 6', RubberDuck, HummingBird, LazyDog, AlleyCat, Glue etc. :) I would like to see some code names from the members as well.

Usually something generic, like "ReportGenerator" or "TradeUploader"... But when I'm starting something that will become a major system, I get creative. Then I like to take words apart, or even go to acronyms. The old portfolio management system I wrote at my previous job was called "___Sheets", where the ___ part was the first syllable of our group name... Not that creative, but it was a start. The current one I'm working on is "Raptor"... "Risk Analysis, Portfolio Tracking, Order Routing system"... Never thought I'd get away with that, but my boss loved it... Even wanted it to "roar" when it started up :)

Proud to have finally moved to the A-Ark. Which one are you in?

I called one of my systems 'Albatross' because it hung around my neck for months (as in The Ancient Mariner). The bosses never cottoned on! I told them that it was an expansion of ALBS (the mainframe only supported 4-char executable file codes) which stood for the AirLine Booking System.

If you don't know what to call it, call it 'Enigma'. We did that once for an email management system since we didn't know why we were writing soooo much code to replace MS Outlook + macros.

I try to think of something clever and catchy and relevant. But if nothing comes to mind within a minute or two I'll go with my "Retro" naming convention by adding a or suffix from this list to the relevant noun or verb:

                                • '-o-matic'
                                • '-o-rama'
                                • '-a-gogo'
                                • 'magic'

                                examples:

                                • WidgOMatic
                                • MagicWidget
                                • TweetORama
                                • TrackMagic
                                • InventoryAGogo

...you get the idea. Works for nouns and verbs! Endless fun. Sometimes I'll even do a logo. If none of those strike me, I'll use the generic 'Thingy', as in 'WidgetThingy' or 'DataFileCleanupThingy'.

I think it must be known in some circles that thinking of a name is a large stumbling block for a project, as you well know. And this must be why Microsoft gives its projects code names. I like to follow the same principle in my own work. The code is what's really important, I'll think of the name later!

Open a Thesaurus at random. Not literally, of course. I just so did, and arrived at a project name called: "Vetust", (Venerable from antiquty) It is as good as anything else.

You could use this format when naming your children. Child 1, Child 2, Child 3 .... and they could name there children, Child 1, Child 2, Child 3 ... And if everybody did this, then at school the teacher could check which children where in by reading the names; "Is Child 1 in", in in here in in present in here, "Child 1", ... PS Twins would be Child 1a and Child 1b.
