Why limit the discussion to browsers that can't keep up with the innovation of the best? I don't like browser extensions, anyway; all they do is slow the browser down. Opera "widgets" can all be installed as stand-alone applets, so you don't have to wait for them all to load, every time you start the browser. I dare say that that's yet another innovative advance that the other browser producers will eventually copy.

Basically, if the browser team hasn't the brains to emulate Opera's best functions, then you need to get addons to fill in those gaping holes. The most obvious is Mouse Gestures. It just sucks that addons will never be as good as building gestures into the core browser code. That said, the various emulation addons can sometimes add nice tweaks that Opera would do well to pull in, too. Like the visible lines to show a gesture in progress. For Firefox & Thunderbird, I find Rikaichan invaluable for Japanese translation. I just wish there was something like it for Chrome and Opera.

What Kristian said, and also Flashblock. Flashblock gets a little annoying at times, but once you add all the most crucial sites to its whitelist, it's very, very, VERY lovely. At least to me. :p

AdBlock Plus. (In my case, for Mozilla Forefox.) I just can't stand those annoying adds like shoot 5 smartphones or kill the pirates. And flash ads slow down my computer, so blocking them seems the best choice. F**k Travian, by the way. (The most annoying ads lead to them.)

For Firefox: IE Tab 2[^] This helps me on never needing to launch Internet Explorer. If there is a web page that works only or better on Internet Explorer, all I have to do is switch the render on a small icon on bottom right of firefox window and voi'la. Really useful, you can have tabs inside firefox that use the firefox engine or internet engine. There is also a chrome renderer.

Flashblock for Firefox is very good. It lets you open lots of tabs without slowing the browser to a crawl.

+1 for AdBlock Plus and Firebug. Nobody's mentioned NoScript[^]? Greasemonkey's quite useful for "fixing" other people's web pages, particularly sites which insist on wrapping every link with an ad-frame.
