In my case that's not really a rational decision. I do not use virtual machines or emulators when I can have the real thing. I still have my first computer from 1978 and a few old computers I used along the years. Playing with oldtimers to some extend is just about missing the comfort of a current machine.

A while ago he asked me what he should have printed on my business cards. I said 'Wizard'. I read books which nobody else understand. Then I do something which nobody understands. After that the computer does something which nobody understands. When asked, I say things about the results which nobody understand. But everybody expects miracles from me on a regular basis. Looks to me like the classical definition of a wizard.

I guess it depends on the person. For me its not about having a "blast from the past" but rather to experiment whatever i want. In my case VirtualBox rule.

I just logged into MSDN to download Visual Studio 2010 and I noticed I can also download Windows 3.11. I'm thinking of creating a partition for it, just for old times' sake. How big do you thinking I should make the partition? Maybe 100MB? ;P Strangely, though, it looks like I can't download Windows 95 or 98. I wonder why that is. I feel like I'm really missing out.

Windows for warehouses 3.11!! That's what we used to call 3.11 because it didn't sell and I was in the biz at the time setting up windows networks on Arcnet lans.

The file browser! Or maybe some of my old QuickBasic 4.5 programs. I can run them now, but then I'd be running them on Windows 3.11! ;P

Ah but it won't support modern hardware such as HDD controllers without the drivers.

Not even if I install it to an IDE hard drive with a partition smaller than 2GB?

I bought my very first PC (a Compaq laptop) in the nineties, I was still heavily using Macs then, as they were way ahead. The little machine had Win3.11 and a 1GB disk, I'm sure I never filled it up as WinWord still fitted on a single floppy. I still must have it somewhere, however I don't expect it to work any more, haven't tried it for years, and am not going to bother... :)

My first PC (a 486?) got burned in a garage fire. :( It had DOS 6.22 and Windows 3.11. Huh, one version is twice the value of the other. Wonder if that was a coincidence.

Sadly controllers have changed - e.g. from ISA to PCI which requires different mapping. The older IDE controllers were at a fixed address.

I've got an old floppy case that has Win NT (some version), Win 3.11, DOS 6.22 etc in, I doubt I'll ever throw them out. I've also got Commander Keen, Crystal Caverns and Frontier around somewhere along with some newer ones on CD that ran on DOS.

You don't have to be mad to live here [UK], but it helps.

You'll need about a 30MB virtual HD to install it on. I managed to fit it onto a 20MB vhd but it was a pain. From what I remember I also had to download a bootable DOS disk from bootdisk.com because the images you get from MSDN aren't bootable.

                                Regards Nelviticus

You do realize putting your email in every message you post in an online forum will get you spammed, right?

You can download it from MSDN, but if you don't already have a subscription, believe me you don't want to pay for one just for DOS and Windows 3.11.
