Really? it seems extremely dangerous, as your suggestion Should they ask "How do you do?", the correct response is to say "How do you do?" back is bound to loop forever. :wtf:

The second "How do you do?" acts like a null on a null terminate string, that's why the rest of the conversation is so tense, formally it has stopped :-)

Yes, but we actually say "How d'y'do". This only applies to the English BTW, it confuses the hell out of the Americans. USians assume that we are just like them (after all the US was founded by the British for the most part and we sort of have the same language). Then they fall foul of the (often highly complex) social norms that we are all used to when they come to the UK. To a non-european (and to many European) UKian culture is probably every bit a odd as Japanese culture is to us. This book Watching The English[^] helped my wife explain a lot of my behaviour. The worst thing is that in the UK we think that we are normal, and everyone else is odd an inexplicable (comes from living on an island I suppose) :-).

That is because we are normal and the rest of the world are weird!

"I am well, how are you" is the correct response. Should they ask "How do you do?", the correct response is to say "How do you do?" back.

Aah, so it's a colonial hangover when two Saffers greet each other with "Howzit!", neither really asking a question despite "howzit" being a badly contacted "how is it [with you]?", with "it" being "life in general".

Says who? Mrs Dullpedant book of English Elocution published in 1932? Bollocks. The correct response is anything you damn well like and commonly is 'mustnt grumble', or, 'OK', or, 'not too bad'. Follwed by 'and you'? 'hows it hanging' is a more common greeting aswell, or 'hows it going' or 'hows life' or 'what do ya know' etc etc etc.

You've misread DD's post the correct answer to "Hello, how are you?" might be this ("I'm well, how are you"or "musn't grumble, and you?" or "well, and you?" etc). If someone asks "How do you do?" it's a formalism, the correct response is "How do you do back". If you actually answer the question, the person talking to you will peg you pretty low in the social scale (and the sort of person who ask that question will do this) or put it down to being foreign. You forget exactly how hidebound and class-concious English society still is.

Good manners have nothing to do with etiquete or social mores but everything to do with making people feel at ease. Using very formal greetings like these is therefore bad mannered. This is the big problem in the UK. The so called 'how to speak and behave' malaise left over from some kind of assumed Victorian morality or set of standards. Its bull. Complete utter bull and should be abandoned. Speak and act normally for christs sake.

And thats why I hate the UK. Its class ridden. I dont give a toss if some wanker objects to being given an answer when he asks 'how do you do'. And if he thinks I am in anyway 'lower class' then he can go f*** himself and his stupid class snobery. Christ, it really reminds me why I live in France!

No, unfortunately its all to fresh in my memory, and one of the principle reasons I hate the place and liive in France. (And by the way its the classism displayed by working class people that I find the most distrubing, for I have what is called a 'posh' accent, which has utterly bared me from enjoying the company of many people in the UK.) Vive la France! --edit-- As for 'hows it hanging' I have heard it a lot in the West Country.

Watched it with the missus, and we heartily enjoyed it -- so it gets Both British and Chinese approval.
