Nope. It's "AHL IS VELL!" in an Indian accent. That's a real winner.

The correct response is anything you damn well like and commonly is 'mustnt grumble', or, 'OK', or, 'not too bad'. Follwed by 'and you'? 'hows it hanging' is a more common greeting aswell, or 'hows it going' or 'hows life' or 'what do ya know' etc etc etc.

No, says the social mores and correct usage of polite enquiry. But I suppose that you were never taught etiquette.

You've misread DD's post the correct answer to "Hello, how are you?" might be this ("I'm well, how are you"or "musn't grumble, and you?" or "well, and you?" etc). If someone asks "How do you do?" it's a formalism, the correct response is "How do you do back". If you actually answer the question, the person talking to you will peg you pretty low in the social scale (and the sort of person who ask that question will do this) or put it down to being foreign. You forget exactly how hidebound and class-concious English society still is.

Good manners have nothing to do with etiquete or social mores but everything to do with making people feel at ease. Using very formal greetings like these is therefore bad mannered. This is the big problem in the UK. The so called 'how to speak and behave' malaise left over from some kind of assumed Victorian morality or set of standards. Its bull. Complete utter bull and should be abandoned. Speak and act normally for christs sake.

And thats why I hate the UK. Its class ridden. I dont give a toss if some wanker objects to being given an answer when he asks 'how do you do'. And if he thinks I am in anyway 'lower class' then he can go f*** himself and his stupid class snobery. Christ, it really reminds me why I live in France!

No, unfortunately its all to fresh in my memory, and one of the principle reasons I hate the place and liive in France. (And by the way its the classism displayed by working class people that I find the most distrubing, for I have what is called a 'posh' accent, which has utterly bared me from enjoying the company of many people in the UK.) Vive la France! --edit-- As for 'hows it hanging' I have heard it a lot in the West Country.

Not all of it, the celtic finges (Scotland, Wales etc) & the North are much better ....

I have the opposite problem. I come from a working-class background and believe me the descrimination is worse & I've seen both side of the fence. I went to a Public (rather than "State" for USian) School and a pretty "Smart" (for UKians) university. You should have seen my interview to get into Oxford :- Needless to say I didn't, I ended up (like so many) at Durham. I have even had problems getting consultancy work (this is not as bad as it used to be), as my accent doesn't fit. Worse, compared to many in Newcastle, I sound "posh" so I get it both ways.

Sorry, we must differ on that point, nothing good can be said about France. Except the Women. And The Vineculture. Oh and Paris is quite nice. :-).

"I am well, how are you" is the correct response. Should they ask "How do you do?", the correct response is to say "How do you do?" back.
