Ok, first off, let me just say I am not buying a new car. I am just shopping for the fantasy of buying one. My current car is paid off and runs great. In my fantasy I dreamed that I wanted to step up in the world to something a little bit better built than an America car (or fake American car, since technically I am driving a Monaro and it is built like crap). In the beginning of my search I settled on the staple of overpaid software engineers everywhere, the BMW M3. $67,000, more like $79,000 out the door. Nice, perfect waste of money. Gas Guzzler tax, German Engineering. Car and Driver's best car, yadda, yadda. But it only has 414 HP and pays an enormous gas guzzler tax. I want more from my fantasy car. Then I stumbled upon unobtanium, the 2011 Ford Mustang GT500. $58,000. 540 horsepower, 510 ft-lbs of torque, no gas guzzler tax. Larger rear-set! Then I looked into a Mustang GT (same performance as the GT500? Wow, I guess it is hard to get more than 400 HP to the road, read note below) $41k for the same! Admittedly, it is still a little hard to swallow. I bought a Mustang GT in 2002 for $20,000 fully loaded. This one would be double! Wow. Good thing this is just a fantasy. Cars are too expensive these days. All of the above said. What is your fantasy marginally affordable over-the-top car? Keep in mind you have to actually be able to buy it or finance it. Note about power to the wheels. Apparently, I am a mature driver. My current car, the 2004 GTO is heavily modified and has 430 HP and 420 ft-lbs and I have never lost control or even brought it to the edge. My nephew's friend (16 with a car) has been begging me to drive it. After listening to the begging for months I finally relented only after much agreements as to how sedately he had to drive. All is going well ... until we return to the neighborhood. On a left hand turn at about 15MPH in 2nd gear he completely lost control of the car; nearly spinning it into a ditch. I did not know my car had that much power. I guess, what that means, is that I am not driving my car hard enough.

Tesla Roadster. EDIT: I wrote "Tesla Roaster" instead of "Tesla Roadster" (now fixed). What are the chances.

Subaru WRX...oh wait, I already have one! :) Seriously, I've had it since 2002 and I'd buy another one again if I needed a new car. It's a dream car in every aspect, super powerful when you need it, highly economical when you don't mat it and the handling is superb, it's super fun to drive on twisty mountain roads that abound around here.

The new Chevy Camaro…it looks like the car I would enjoy to drive. I actually could afford it, but we are family of four on one salary living in a very expensive town and if I buy this beauty we will scratch the bottom of the barrel, so no Camaro for Deyan.

There's a 2009 Shelby at a car lot right down from where I work - he only wants $35k for it. It's the classic dark blue/white stripes. Not as much power as the 2011, but almost as much, and still more than the 2011 GT.

a BMW 3 convertible would be fine. i don't have any use for more than 300hp. hell, the 200hp my Audi A4 gets is wasted on the 12 mile drive to work - i can speed the whole way there and never get the tach above 3K.

The E92 M3 would be my choice, good around corners. Well balanced. Friend has Merc C63 AMG and that thing is scary. 0 to 250km/h comes way to quickly :~

Pontiac GTO 1969 Or if you prefer something new... I'd much like as you said, a Mustang GT500 or supposing a didn't have any expenses and I could perfectly only work to pay the car, I'd go for a Dodge Viper SRT-10 ;P And yes, either you are not driving your car as it needs or you really know what do you do to your car each time you abuse of it like that.

This is the reason for the most of the heavy highway accidents.

All joking aside, I'm driving it. Every now and then it sinks in that as a kid I always dreamed of owning a Corvette and now I actually have one. Plenty of stuff out there that's faster / more expensive / more prestigious / etc. of course. However, there was always something about Vettes to me. When I went shopping for my first one I looked at Porches, Beemers, Mercedes and the like but always came back around to my boyhood dream. And dumb as it sounds, I drive the last year of the C5s, not a C6, because real Corvettes have pop up headlights. Yeah, I know, silly. But then, so is the concept of anything beyond a purely functional vehicle, so what the hell. :)

Unfortunately, other drivers on the road like to intentionally block you from passing. They do this by either pulling out and front of you when you try to pass or by speeding up when you pass. The only effective strategy I have found to pass is to tailgate, downshift, and pass. Slowly accelerating, signaling and changing lanes usually only results in frustration.

I thinking I am just driving it right. I can light the tires up through every gear and keep the car tracked straight under full throttle without breaking a sweat. I only drive two ways, full-throttle and cruise control.

I don't really fantasize about cars. I always find it silly when most guys talk non-stop about most unpractical and pretty much unaffordable cars they "would get" if they could. But then again, I think their obsession with sports when most of them can't run a hundred yards without getting a heart attack is equally as silly. That said I'd love to have Subary Legacy 2.5 Turbo Wagon with roof rack. IMO it's a perfect combination of gas mileage, usability - all wheel drive, utility - lots of cargo space in the back, roof rack for kayaks, hitch for carrying bikes, and turbo power to haul all of the above. Sadly it is not offered in North America. Perhaps some day Subary will bring it to N.A. and perhaps it will just so happen that I would be looking to replace my current car...

You would be surprised just how many of those jerks are out there. And minority is irrelevant. If only 1% of the drivers on the road are morons that intentionally block the flow of traffic consider just how many you face. You are in Atlanta, right? Try the left-lane on 285 at 4PM and watch idiots brake because they forgot to change lanes early and watch as drivers change into your lane off speed. Of course, if you try the same thing at 2 PM could probably drive 95mph with no problem. Atlanta is the only place I have been where bumper to bumper traffic can exceed 90 MPH.

a BMW 3 convertible would be fine. i don't have any use for more than 300hp. hell, the 200hp my Audi A4 gets is wasted on the 12 mile drive to work - i can speed the whole way there and never get the tach above 3K.

Same here on my 06 Buick LaCross. There're a few spots I drive occasionally where I have to pull out into traffic on a steep uphill where I get the tach briefly above 5k; but none are on my commute. I probably could hit 5k if I floored it on the highway on ramp, but it's long enough that there's no need to do anything like that; and the cars in front of you generally mean you couldn't anyway.
