Because I wanna play Red Alert and Descent 3 at 1680x1050 dammit, all natively, I'm curious how installing Windows 98 will go with 1 GB RAM. (I do know of tricks to get it to play nice with more, just that I'll be installing. I'd buy 2 512 MB sticks but they don't have DDR2 800 ones :( ) If needed I can use Windows ME. I've checked the the mobo has W98 compatible things on it.

Two words: Virtual Machine. VMware Workstation is free now, as is the Microsoft Virtual PC (VMWare is better).

It's gonna be a Windows 98/ME and Debian dual boot (If I get my Vista disc it will be the triple bypass, the unholy alliance), I don't really want to use VirtualBox; I want to impress nerds with my blasphemous desktop.

The problem with virtual machines is that they don't really work well with DirectX or OpenGL apps because the video card is treated like a standard VGA adapter - unless things have changed radically snce the last time I tried...

I think may have problems with disk sizes as well. Win98 might be an ultimately better choice, or even Windows 2000.

Several of the virtual machines have 2D and 3D accelerated opengl and directx. This still comes with a performance penalty but a lot less then 100% emulated. Also several will allow you to allocate GPUs to your guest provided you have extra GPUs and that you have a processor with the support for this.

Not if I partition the disk with GParted into nice little chunks first! My plan is a a 20 GB FAT32 part for Win98, 10 GB for Debian ext3 and how it likes it's partitions, maybe 40 for Vista NTFS if it's possible and the rest in a shared FAT32 partition

Probably doable. Just remember to install windows versions in chronological order an linux last to keep your boot loader healthy.

I have a removable drive tray instead of a multi-boot system. BTW, is your boot drive a SATA drive? If so, are there SATA drivers for Win9x? EDIT ------- I found that there are no SATA drivers for Win98, but at least one person has gotten it to install.

You can configure Sata drives to work in legacy mode via BIOS, but IIRC there's a performance penalty in doing so.

Descent 3 and its expansion can be legally bought for next to nothing (DRM free) from here: http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/descent_3_expansion[^] It's already patched to work on XP, Vista and Seven. Be sure to check their entire catalogue for that matter. That site is just awesome. Red Alert is now freeware and I've seen a friend playing it a few months ago on Vista: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Command_%26_Conquer:_Red_Alert#Released_as_freeware[^]

That is a great site! (gog). I can now blame you for 2011 being 10% less efficient than it would otherwise have been... Iain.

I think you'll find that vmware server is free, not workstation. But it uses the same emulation, so will definitely do what you want! In fact I'm about to run up an XP machine using Workstation to see if the wretched Samsung KIes software will play better than it does under Win7... 8)

Two words: Virtual Machine. VMware Workstation is free now, as is the Microsoft Virtual PC (VMWare is better).

VMware Workstation is free now ...

I went to find this free version of workstation at VMWare and I only found the expensive versions of everything except for Zimbra open source, which isn't vmware.

                                        Do you have a link?

I tried Red Alert on MS Virtual PC a few years back, it would *work* well, but multiplayer didn’t for some reason (can’t remember why) so it was a no go, Red Alert Multiplayer was amazing, we used to play every Sunday when the phone call / modem connection was 1p a minute! Worse happened to Total Annihilation (which is an amazing game), it just crashed straight away, apparently Total Annihilation uses some special instruction that just isn’t implemented in MS VPC. If I were to do this again, I’d use VirtualBox, it seems much faster than MS VPC.
