HIV drug patent rejected to reduce prices[^] I am not sure about patent law,but IMHO patent in one country is binding on all other nations. So I am not sure how this can be rejected by Indian Office. Can anyone throw some light on this issue. What stops anybody/anywhere to copy drugs, technology etc?

You have to apply for patents in different countries. Beyond that, it is a matter of trade agreements and the WTO etc..

If I find a new way of "doing something", then I have to patent in all the 200+ odd countries?

From what I know you must apply for patent in each country so it might be rejected

Yes. Bear in mind, as well, that some countries are less stringent about patents than others, and seem to have no problems with blatant piracy.

There are many international agreements. Any patent filed in an EU country is covered over the whole of the EU.

You can always talk anything about North Korea, as much as you want. No one cares as no one there can read it.

No, you don't have to do anything: you choose in which countries you file for a patent, and your invention will be protected in the countries where you obtained patents. So if you just go for France and Germany, your invention will not be protected in the rest of Europe. :)

I don't think so. AFAIK you can still file in some country protecting your invention in just that country. Or you can file in one country targeting the whole of Europe, pay a lot more for all the translations and fees, and get protection for the whole of Europe (as always, barring those countries that have chosen not to participate). :)
