It was the arrogance of deciding everyone wanted to be American that is the basic problem. And that was decided by half a dozen men.

Nope: Hamsters. Hamsters should definitely run the world. Absolutely. I'll help in any way I can. And this has nothing to do with the 3619 reputation points I lost in the reshuffle last weekend, and would really like back in the reshuffle this weekend, if that's all right with the Hamsters?
Real men don't use instructions. They are only the manufacturers opinion on how to put the thing together.

I'm all for that. They certainly couldn't do any worse. :)
Chris Meech I am Canadian. [heard in a local bar] In theory there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice there is. [Yogi Berra] posting about Crystal Reports here is like discussing gay marriage on a catholic church’s website.[Nishant Sivakumar]

It's Bulgaria all over again

Where do you think "bugger" comes from? Some version of Bulgarian (Bougre, buggero, bujarrón) exists in every European language and they all mean sodomite. You Brits tried to free them from the Russians and Ottomans in the Crimean War and discovered their nasty little habits that way.

Every word that I wrote is the absolute truth. No matter how loudly you yell, no matter upset you get, the historical facts remain. Check any dictionary you like, the etymology of the term "bugger" is "Bulgarian." And all of Western Europe used to assume that most folks in Bulgaria were queer as a three dollar bill, so much so that some corruption of Bulgarian means sodomite in most of Europe.

No, but he is responsible for two unnecessary wars, the deaths of tens of thousands, a world-wide torture regime, and numerous violations of US law.

And also doing more to eradicate AIDS from the African Continent than the rest of the world put together. Look I hold no great brief for George Bush. Some folks back in the late great Soapbox called me a traitor because I listed my objection to his presidency. But I am amused by those who claim that America is responsible for every ill in the world. Do you really, for one second, actually maintain that America is the only country in the world to use torture? Or even the one that uses it the most? My view: the U.S. is neither a great saint nor the great Satan. We have been a force for good when we could and done things that caused great evils when we shouldn't. I certainly agree that we shouldn't have gone into Iraq; it was wrong for so many reasons that the elimination of Saddam's despotism doesn't counterbalance them in the slightest. We wasted a great many American and British lives and billions of dollars on a nation that was barbaric, is barbaric and will be barbaric. Bush's dream of turning both Iraq and Afghanistan into places fit for human habitation was misguided, stupid, and foolish. We should have left them on their own to kill each other in whatever ways they saw fit.

that is really great - no sarcasm - but that does nothing to mitigate anything that I have just said.

No. Just because others do it does not excuse us. Torture is still wrong regardless of who does it, or their motives.

I don't know how else to deal with a world view that seems as divorced from reality as yours. Life, I am afraid, is not a moral jungle gym and there is no gold medal for being nice. Nor are your personal contacts a sufficient sampling of the universe to be offered up as something other than anecdotal evidence. As to judging a man only by his failings, I sincerely hope that never happens to you.

Arrogant... Yes. Foolish... yes. We seem to just follow around old colonial powers (Great Britain, France, Spain, etc...) and try to clean up their messes. It didn't work for them and works no better for the US.

I have no problem with homosexuality, I do , however, have a problem with children being sodomised for the pleasure of old men. You, apparently, have no problem with that.

From the article "British officers in Helmand requested the study to help them understand the sexual behaviour of locals and Afghan comrades after young soldiers became uneasy they were being propositioned. American social scientists employed to help troops understand the local culture reported that homosexual sex was widespread among the Pashtun ethnic group in southern Afghanistan. Strict separation of men and women, coupled with poverty and the significant expense of getting married, contributed to young men turning to each other for sexual companionship. "To dismiss the existence of this dynamic out of desire to avoid western discomfort is to risk failing to comprehend an essential social force underlying Pashtun culture," the report said. ' Nothing here about either children or sodomy. "Older, powerful men boosted their social status by keeping boys as sexual playthings and the practice was celebrated in song and dance, a military study claimed. " OK, you're reading sodomy into it, and how does one define a boy here? Given that (apparently) the whole reason for the study was that the soldiers were being propositioned - are we talking late teenagers , prepubescent boys? It does say "where prepubescent boys are widely admired." which is worrying, but it does NOT say prepubescent boys are widely buggered. It also says "Western soldiers often report feeling unease at the attentions of their Afghan comrades, who are affectionate with each other and sometimes wear make-up. " Are their comrades prepubescent? No - so they seem to be saying that our wonderful boys are a bit homophobic? "British troops have also talked of their disgust at police or militias keeping young boys as hangers on. " Worrying - yes - but what is a hanger on (on to what are they hanging?) "She said: "They were having young men who were beginning to feel uncomfortable because they felt they were being approached." She said the study gave no advice about what action troops should take if they confronted paedophilia. " Seems to me that the reporter has asked the author about it, to which she has replied "No - the report says nothing about what troops should do if confronted by paedophilia" And then "Afghanistan is a sovereign nation with its own law under which the sexual abuse of children is illegal. " IN all, this news report is crap, says nothing and insinuates much.

Okay, let's do the easiest thing - look at wikipedia: "Etymologically, a "Bugger" was a "Bulgre" (French Bougre). Originally, it was derived from the French word "Boulgrerie" ("of Bulgaria"), meaning the medieval Bulgarian clerical sect of the Bogomils." ... Meanwhile, the Bogomils "regarded every material being to be work of Satan, and therefore sinful", which made their lifestyle quite ascetic - but this info is for advanced "absolute truth" speakers... Oakman, kindly check the dictionaries YOURSELF before asking the others to do it. BTW, after Your statement I conclude that "all of Western Europe" was in desperate need of a word to name ..err.. a notable number of west-european countrymen... ;)
