I just noticed I have six copies of Visual Studio open. A Compact Framework app in VS2005, two VS2008s with C++ projects, and a C++ and two WPF projects open in three VS2010s. Yikes. I "only" have 4GB of RAM on 64-bit W7, but everything is still pretty snappy. And it's reporting 1.3GB still available. Even bouncing between all of them is responsive. I think it's time I try to concentrate, I should close at least half of them.

why do you have so many different projects in different versions of VS open at the same time? just wondering. My boss likes to have 20+ apps/windows open at a time. Drives me bonkers. :)

It's because people keep coming in to ask about stuff in different projects, and I've been here long enough to have had a hand in just about everything. Plus I have the current project I'm supposed to be working on. Of course the constant interruptions are enough to drive me postal. :wtf: But that's a different post.

I usually just open Notepad++ with the source file in question in these cases. Mostly because my dev box here at work isn't beefy enough to handle more than two Studio sessions. (I'm actually just jealous that you have a "useable" machine and I don't)

          I wasn't, now I am, then I won't be anymore.

Look at the commit charge on the processes performance tab. WIndows tries to keep a good chunk of memory free so that allocations are snappy even if it means dumping running apps into the swap file.

There ya go - my kind of guy! The first thing anybody says when they look at my computer is "My, you have a crazy number of windows on your taskbar!" I only have 3 GB of RAM because I am still on a 32-bit machine so if I added another GB I would only be able to use part of it. So in my case I do have issues with responsiveness at times.

I had over 60 windows open on my PC at work earlier this week. It is really struggling, XP SP2 3GB RAM, but it is also just over 2 years old and apparently we have a 5 year replacement policy for PCs. The near half hour it takes me to reboot and get going again after it throws a wobbly is not helping my argument for a better machine at the moment.
