IE6

So, I've followed the instructions offered on several websites, and IE6 still is not showing my PNGs with transparency. I am not sure if it's because I am in a VM, or I'm doing something wrong, or what. I am still incredulous that Microsoft could be so stupid. Has anyone else had this issue ( that is, PNGs on a website and the online fixes don't seem to work )

I have not had that issue, but the website I work on requires that PNG's use transparency with IE6. I know it works, but I don't know how, as I didn't implement that myself.

There's a fix on the web, IE6 can do it, but Microsoft didn't bother to hook it up. Sadly, I've implimented it and deployed it several times and it still does not work.

Yeah, I see that... I know IE6 is a problem, but lots of people still use it and this is a consumer facing site.

But thats the problem, if you continue to support it, it will never go away. Go on, bite the bullet, let it die.....its had its day.

I don't know what you've read to try and fix it, but this details the issue, the workaround and the pitfalls. http://24ways.org/2007/supersleight-transparent-png-in-ie6[^]

Thankfully less and less all the time. http://news.cnet.com/8301-30685_3-20030176-264.html[^] "Internet Explorer 6...continued its decline, with a 1.77 [percentage point] drop reaching 12.03 percent in January worldwide. I had to resort to using 8 bit pngs for IE6, which basically act like transparent .gifs. I wrote an image control that checks the browser version/type and picks the image accordingly. There's probably a way to use css hacks, but I don't know off the top of my head. http://civicactions.com/blog/png_images_transparency_ie6_answers_to_theming_hell[^] http://schoberg.net/2009/07/degradable-png-transparency-for-ie6/[^]

I assume they are developer sites, not sites aimed at the general public. 10% is still one in ten users, we still want them.

yes developer sites. I think one of the ones that I couldn't get to with IE6 was TechNet.

If memory serves there is an ActiveX control you need to install for PNGs to work in IE6.

8bit PNGs? Otherwise AFAIR you have to use ActiveX or other ungodly work-arounds to support 16 or 24 bit PNGs. And, vague here, 8bit PNG transparency is noticeably different. Still alpha but just less colours to play with? *keeps stabbing away with vague suggestions* Thankfully my last few jobs have been IE7 and up.
cheers, Paul M. Watson.

it's not that he's *using* IE6, he has to write html code to *support* IE6 users.
