I don't either - it's not like they had a Christina Aguilera song they could use for the music...

But if she doesn't put her own mark on the song then it just sounds like any other talentless, fatuous bint at a drunken karaoke bar in Benidorm.

Because Christina Aguilera butchered the national Anthem on Sunday, people are starting to suggest that we should change the anthem to be America the Beautiful because the Star Spangled Banner is "too hard to sing", the lyrics are "biligerent", and the tune itself is based on an English drinking song. Hard to sing, meaning the words are too complicated, or are difficult to remember? The lyrics are "biligerent"? Damn skippy the lyrics are biligerent.

Coming from a country where the national anthem wasn't sung at all into a country where it's *cough* customary to sing only the 3rd verse, I unfortunately qualify for sympathy only, not ridicule. But here's peterchen's handy rules for anthems: 1. If it can't be sung while drunk, it's not an anthem 2. in a country where people find drinking songs "to hard to sing", evolution might indeed just be fiction

She's not the first to butcher it and probably won't be the last. It just means that the people who decide who is going to sing it, should take greater care in choosing whom they select. The woman who sings the anthem before each Philadelphia Flyer's hockey game would have been a much better choice. :)

I think the organizers are trying to over-sensationalize the event. I mean, it's the freakin Super Bowl - you don't need to spend a million dolars to get someone famous to sing the National Anthem. What they should start doing is holding local auditions and using local talent for the job. THAT would be more interesting to me. Screw the big name "artists". I don't want artisitic - I want it done right.

I don't undertsand why people can't sing the song without stylizing it. THAT is why they screw it up. They're concentrating so hard on gargling while they're singing that they "lose their place".

It's playing big in Canada because every Canadian is deeply familiar with the words to the Star Spangled Banner having heard them sung about a zillion times by the age of 20 from watching a zillion hockey games. I'll wager more Canadians know the lyrics to the Star Spangled banner on average than Americans.

I remember a couple of cases of people complaining about the "texting", how and what words are mapped to a song's melody back when I was at the conservatory. The complaint was that the words were not very well chosen or laid out, and they made the song difficult to sing because of that. Something about the how the number of syllables in some of the words made the flow or rhythm of the piece more difficult and made for easy mistakes.

Or you could go down the Chinese root and have someone attractive miming it for the cameras whilst someone who can actually sing belts it out from inside the stands somewhere.

I love hearing both national anthems prior to a game here in Canada. I used to make my kids stand up with me too even though we're watching it on TV.

Jim Cornelison is my favorite singer, and the tradition of Blackhawk fans is great. Everyone should come to Chicago for a hockey game just to mark it off their bucket list. If you are unaware of the tradition, fans go bat apesh*t during the anthem, usually making it the loudest point during any game (122Db). During the playoffs last year my ears rang after the song every time. http://blackhawks.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=531107[^] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_nQ-GNdo3E[^]

From what I hear/read persons signing the national anthem are offered a card with the lyrics. Most of the flubbers pass on the card and try to sing/wing it. Read the darn card. It isn't hard. Oh, and, um, practice. This goes equally well for Presidents making first pitches.
