eReader Question

Thinking about buying an eReader and as always, I am the most impatient man in the world and want it now. I am looking at a couple of them now and want some feedback from others who use these devices and maybe able to point me in the direction of an ereader I don't know about or tell me why the ones I am looking at suck arse. 1st is the Kindle[^], it's $139.00 which is good,but I have to but it online and wait 3-5 days for delivery, that's like asking me to wait for beer. Also read that it's handling of PDFs, specifically zooming is not that good. More books available via Amazon. 2nd is the Sony Reader Touch Edition PRS-650[^], I can walk over to Border's at lunch and pick one up, but it's RRP is $229.00. Reviews tell me the PDF handling is superior including zooming and it has memory expansion via SD Card or Memory Stick Pro. Less books as partnered with Borders and Angus & Robertson. Give me recommendations, as I know I will go and buy the Sony on impulse, even though it is over my budget of $250.00, which was to include accessories and probably some books.

Nah, I've squirrelled away the money and it's going to be spent, just hoping to spend it on something useful. The Lenovo S10e is a netbook, Atom 1.6GHz CPU, 2GB RAM and running Windows 7. I'm hoping not to spent $300.00 odd when I can get something as good or better for more like $150.00. The Kindle by all reckoning is the device to go with, but the books are not stored on the device (therefore backed up to my PC/Server/Backup USB HDD), I don't know if I can load PDF's I already have to it and also as the Most Impatient Man in the Universe, I want the fucking thing now. I want to walk over to Macquarie Centrein the next half an hour and walk out with one in my hands.

Not as heavily used as my laptop, but it does get used, handy when testing connectivity and managing server in Data Centres that don,t have much space to work in.

I read a LOT (downloaded PDF articles, textbooks, books for pleasure, word documents) and purchased the Sony PRS-650. I'm really happy with it. It's not PERFECT with PDFs but it does it pretty well though there are certainly things about the zoom controls that I would have changed - however in general it has lessened my daily load of books and printouts spectacularly, and since I like to read when I'm traveling it's fantastic to not have to cart around 5-6 books like I used to do. I've only come across a few books that I wanted but couldn't get yet - mostly older ones, and I guess other disadvantages of it include the lack of wireless access (meaning content updates require a connection to the computer or using the SD slot, where the Kindle/Koobo can purchase wirelessly?), no LIT file support (if that kind of thing matters to you), and the user interface can be clunky at times. I haven't actually tried the SD expansion because I haven't run out of room on it yet. Also, I wouldn't really consider using it as a tool for quick reference, the user interface isn't really fast enough to use it like that efficiently. Also (2), the reason I wouldn't use an iPad to read with is because the backlight tires out my eyes. I much prefer the reader in that respect. Hope this helps!

Borders also have the Kobo eReader[^], it does do PDF, no idea what it is like but maybe they would let you compare it to the Sony and at only $179 it's worth a look.

Last I heard, you email the PDF's to some Amazon service, and they convert it for you and send it to your Kindle. Or something funky like that. I think it takes a matter of seconds.

An iPad is the only sensible option. It's a backlit Kindle, has another book store you can access, will hold all your photos, plays games, reads your mail and gives you web browsing and games.

I was under the impression that the lack of a backlight was a feature. Supposedly, the Kindle is very much like paper, so it is very easy on the eyes. Or so I'm told.

I've herd of 'Duokan's firmware' for Kindle. Supposedly it handles PDF's (and more) a lot better than Kindle's firmware. I have not tried it myself (Chinese hacking skills scare me :-D ) , so I can't really advise for or against it, just thought I can mention it's out there. Anyway, you may want to google for 'duokan' A couple of guys here[^] seem to like it.

My Kindle Experience: 2-3 days? Lucky you. I had to wait for 2 months - but then, I'm in one of these backwater Youropin countries. Reasons for picking the kindle: All reviews / comparisons I found agreed that the kindle has by far the best display. XKCD[^] reddit[^] (free 3G ist the $189 version, though.) Reading PDF's is usually OK in landscape format. (You can zoom etc., but that's not fun for reading, in landscape, zoom isn't necessary). Conversion of PDF's works well for text (recommended), but I never found a PDF where all images where converted correctly. I didn't try to many converters, though. The web browsing is "experimental" and at least for me limited to selected sites (i.e. I can use wikipedia, but I can't google). I am not sure how that is in the US version. Still, it was a selling point. UI is not smooth for that - touch would work better, and the four way controller is a bit flimsy for heavy use, but it works. I now have it for about a month, and still love it. It's great great great for continuous reading. I'm a bit set back for reading technical documents which often need jumping around. The firmware certainly can be improved, but all improvements I can think of are no match for our "paper navigation skills". OTOH I use it to collect PDF documents I "should read sooner or later", and indeed do, so it works better than that "Read!" bookmarks my browser has.

My Mother in law, who is in her mid 70's, recently was given the Sony machine as a present and absolutely loves it. She has always been a voracious reader, but has got fed up of having so many books scattered about the house. The Sony fits in her poket and goes everywhere with her. As it is possible to change the text size of these readers, I am thinking of getting one for my mother, who is partially sighted. These days she normally just listens to audiobooks. The Sony does not have mp3 functionality, but the Kindle does, so if getting one for her I would have to go with a reader that offers both types of functionality

Kindle, without hesitation. Brilliant piece of kit that does one thing and does it well. I agree that pdfs aren't that great so I keep them on the pc and will, as required, buy them new for the Kindle.

I've had a Nook WiFi since late November and love it. I believe it handled PDF as well, though I haven't tried any.
