Paul Watson wrote: Christmas is the celebration of Jesus' birth. According to my Western Civ. professor; Christmas came about when the Church tried to convert a large population of party loving pagans. The pagans got to keep their festivals and the Church got more followers. Then again, this was the same prof. who said Jethro Tull produced awful music. And people say I 'didn't pay attention in class'...or was that I 'didn't go to class'...maybe I 'have no class'? :P James - out of order -

Wow, looks like my prof. may have been right :) http://de.essortment.com/christmaspagan_rece.htm[^] I misspoke though; instead of saying that "Christmas isn't the celebration of Jesus' birth" I should have said it wasn't originally the celebration of his birth. No one says you have to celebrate something on the anniversary of the occasion, which is where I goofed up :-O James - out of order -

Paul Watson wrote: Well if Christmas is not the celebration of Jesus' birth then why the hell do I get ropped into going to church on Christmas day and seeing the nativity scene hmmm? If you are a Catholic then naturally you should go to church since it is a day created by the Catholic church. For the rest of us, it is personal. I do not care about it or go to church because it is a Xmas. I welcome the day as another day for fun, but nothing to do with Christianity - in Japan is should rather be a time for boy-girl relations :(( Best regards, Paul. Jesus Christ is LOVE! Please tell somebody.

Let's see if I can get this right.... A month before this celebration, all muslims go on a month long fasting. This is done to feel to suffering and hunger in the world. After that, they celebrate! I'm sure there's much more to it, but I can't really remember :( Notorious SMC

Paul, all "Christian" holidays were established to coincide with European pagan festivals. Christmas and Easter both have roots in pagan Europe. The early church was smart enough to realize that it would be easier to convert the pagans if they didn't try to force them to adapt to an entirely alien religious calender. Paul Watson wrote: Care to explain what EID is all about? Like Christmas for Christians and Hanukah for Jews, Muslims have two major days of celebration, namely the feast of Ramadhan ('EId Al-Fitr) and the Feast of Sacrifice ('Eid Al-Adhha). The word 'Eid is an Arabic name to mean a festivity, a celebration, a recurring happiness, and a feast. The first 'Eid is celebrated by Muslims after fasting the month of Ramadan as a matter of thanks and gratitude to Almighty God. This year, Eid will be celebrated on December 6. The second 'Eid is the Feast of Sacrifice and it is to be celebrated for the memory of prophet Abraham trying to sacrifice his son Ishmael. This 'Eid lasts four days between the tenth and the thirteenth day of Zul-Hijjah, the twelfth month of the lunar calendar. // Fazlul

Paul Watson wrote: Well if Christmas is not the celebration of Jesus' birth then why the hell do I get ropped into going to church on Christmas day and seeing the nativity scene hmmm? Christmas is a celebration of Jesus' birth. Just because it was set up to match what had been a pagen celebration does not change that. If you choose to not celebrate Christmas fine. But go call your celebration something else. I will celebrate Jesus' birth. I also believe if religious freedom (skip multi page explaination.) So it is not my right to dictate my belief's on others. And the world will be much better off if we share and understand each other. Given this I will wish this years EID to our Muslim CPians be good to them and hope that it allows us all to be more understanding. "I will find a new sig someday."

Paul Watson wrote: Well if Christmas is not the celebration of Jesus' birth then why the hell do I get ropped into going to church on Christmas day and seeing the nativity scene hmmm? You get roped into going to church because they are misguided. It Christians where intended to celebrate Jesus' birthday, it would say so in the bible. Instead, we are to remember his death every first day of the week when we partake in the Lord's Supper. Christmas didn't originate in Christianity, it started when the Catholic Church tried to convert some party lovin' pagans like James said. Christmas is a shortened form of Christ's Mass (Mass, another invention of the Catholic church completely unknown in the Bible). Christmas is fine if you take the "Christ" out of Christmas. I celebrate it as a day for family and giving gifts, not as the birth of Christ. Jason Gerard "This almost never matters, except quite often."

I think the Jewish "Feast of Dedication" (Hannakah today) was around this time. Who knows when Christ was really born.
