The only notable (IMO) change in specs was the move to the dual-core A5, but other than that, it's looking a lot like they've played 'catch-up' with Android devices. The next six months should be all Android in the tablet market...if you're willing to wait another 4-6 weeks, that landscape has the opportunity to be much more attractive than iOS.

I found it interesting that Jobs was there. I saw a local business broadcast this morning that was suggesting the value of Apple's stock by the end of the day would be determined by him showing up or not. I guess he showed up, this saving millions in company value for his investors. I really don't get why that matters, I guess it proves further that investors are too psychological to be rational.

Well, it's nice incremental hardware upgrade at the same cost of the original model. Smaller, more powerful, dual cameras, ... If other companies were so smart, why did they not have all of this 1 year ago ?

Shouldn't that be iNvestors?

The 9x boost in GPU speed is IMO probably more significant than the addition of a second core and likely switch to the Cortex A9 architecture. It also makes the rumors that Apple was interested in a 2048x1536 screen but that the suppliers couldn't follow through more plausible. At the time I dismissed the idea on the grounds that a single process shrink would only yield a 2x GPU improvement and they'd need 4x to stay in in place. Assuming 9x is a legit number though the only reason to hold back if they could get the screens would be to keep the iPhone/iPad performance levels in sync with the same SOC running both; a restriction that Apple's margins are large enough to absorb if they wanted to.

I would agree with that, but I can't see any app seriously taking advantage of it, not on that display. At 4x or maybe even 2x you might have seen some value in the cost associated in moving to a faster GPU, but there is no way to upgrade your screen, so it's only wasted on the current iteration. It's not like a mac mini that you just buy a new monitor for down the road. As a consumer, why would you want app developers investing in something that you won't be able to take advantage of. It's a bad play right now: if devs start banking on future resolutions (and dealing with artwork in that capacity) consumers will have to pay more for that now, with no chance to ever see the benefit. All of this is obviously debatable. Between Fruit Ninja and Angry Birds, I'm sure someone will find an interesting use for the extra GPU power. As someone else mentioned, it's a nice, if not expected, incremental step while maintaining price.

It's not just the iPhad2 that's looking thinner, Steve Jobs looks like he is wearing a sack. I don't like Apple much, but I hope he pulls through. Says a lot about the product that the had to wheel him out to make it look important.

mobile GPUs are so far behind desktop ones in capability that anything doing 3d gfx should be able to absorb the extra power easily by cranking options up.

You've got that problem with each new generation of device. The simplest way to maintain compatabilty with older devices, and what I expect to see in the short term, is that devs just crank AF/AA levels up for the A5. Both options take significantly more GPU power at high levels than off, so it's the easiest way to take advantage of the extra power. At the meta-level, a 9x increase will probably blow every other dual core A9 SOC out of the water (the pre/views on anandtech so far indicated mostly incremental die shrink doubling upgrades); a redesign that extensive will probably allow Apple to stay on top for at least a year. Ummmm.... Android has a lot of catch-up to do in the apps department. As for all the soon-to-be Android tablets... quantity doesn't mean quality. I haven't seen one "leaked" yet that doesn't look cheesy.
