I was thinking about trying these guys: Arvixe[^] Unlimited disk space, unlimited bandwidth, and all the important ASP.Net stuff - $5/month

Hi Guys.... I'm at the point of gong bald and sitting with chunks of my hair on the ground next to me with my current hosting company. Following is a brief description of the hell I have been going through the last 2 weeks, so if you want to skip it all, just go to the last two sentences ;) I'm currently doing my hosting via Aplus.net, and the first client that I have where is something involved other than a quick dotnetnuke or wordpress site, a nice little challenge for once, then it turns out a bigger challenge than what I was anticipating. Well... it started that I need a nice sql database, so quickly hop onto their control panel and..... oops, unable to create the domain via the control panel.. get an error. No problem, on chat and they create the domain for me... step one done... domain is registered. Second thing, the database. Back into the control panel to create the database... ooops, unable to create the database via the control panel... get an error. No problem once again on chat, they do something in the backend, ask me to try again, sure thing there I can create the database from the control panel. Nice thing about the package that I have, is that I get a free MSSQL database :-\ , just what I want. Database is created but I'm unable to connect via management studio, back on chat... ok I need IP whitelisting to connect to the database, fine I give them my IP address... while they are busy with whitelisting I get a nice sms, there just went R170 (South African Rand) off my account  . I'm on chat with them so I query this as I'm suppose to get a free database. Yes they tell me, the free database is a 50MB database, and I created a 100MB database, but 100MB was the smallest option that there was, you can choose either 100, 250, 500, 1GB or 2GB database.. Oh they tell me, they will log a support ticket to change the database and then I need to contact their billing department to get the refund. (Still waiting for that to be cleared up) and did I mention that is R170 per month. :omg: :omg: :omg: Now all this happend 2 weeks ago. Every since then I have been having issues connecting to the database where I get that lovely network or instance related error message, so for the last 2 weeks I have been on their chat on a daily basis, re-requesting the IP whitelisting for it appears to reset somehow that they can't explain. So I think it is time for me to move hosting company, so any suggestions for reliable and affordable hosting companies that I can look at? My requirem

We ran the gamut of them before we went to Serverbeach and we've been happy ever since. It's relatively easy to manage your own server and it's *never* down in many years of dealing with them. Also you get lot's of space which you don't on any of the hosted servers unless you pay through the nose extra for it.

Although this[^] plan does not meet your .Net 4.0 + MS SQL, I have used them for several clients and at just $6 / month (2 year pre-pay) it's a bargin for what is provided.

Netnation? Those bastards were scum of the earth about 5 years ago. They kept getting bought out and the service quality would plummet each time to the point people were fleeing like rats from a drowning ship. Either a lot has changed or you have *very* low standards. :)

No way is that as good as it looks, I just did a search for this kind of stuff about a month ago and nobody is offering unlimited disk space or bandwidth. There's something fishy going on there.

I have used DiscountASP and found them to be excellent, I now use Arvixe as they are quite a bit cheaper, the support is not quite as good as DASP but it is adequate. I'm hosting an SL4/SQL Server app there. With embedded SSRS reports (pop up ASP viewer page) so it was a bit of a challenge with the configs.

When you take a look at their SQL Server there are literally 100s of databases on the same server, if you are after high perfomance then the cheap plan is not going to work. They are excellent for a light weight site and deve/testing.

When referring to hosting "Unlimited" means "...within the constraints of what's available between all the other customers on the shared server, and that we reserve the right to suspend the account of anyone going too far over the average utilization level."

That's false advertising. I checked, there is no asterisk beside it, when you click on the full description there is no legalese or restrictions mentioned of any kind.

I guess it's common practice but it smacks of weasel behavior to say "unlimited" on the main page, click on the ? details link and it still says and unqualified "unlimited" then find it's really limited but in no certain terms. So I guess in sum it's a great host for messing around as a developer and experimenting but not a host to which you would want to expose paying customers.

For most customers probably not; but if you do small projects as well as larger ones at least some of them would probably be fine with it. Small businesses without any desire to expand beyond the local region are unlikely to ever have much traffic, and there are non-technical people who only need someone to configure their out of the box CMS and put a bit of basic branding on it.

My requirem

You've had a few painful moments, haven't you? The last time I tried to transfer a domain - from ReadyHosting to Webhost4Life.com, it took nearly a year to get things sorted out! It's such a painful process (needlessly so) that I'd have to be very thoroughly convinced that the move is necessary before I'd attempt it again. That would have to be quite an argument, considering that I've had the domain about 8 years and never hosted a website, for lack of anything interesting to say. Silly, I know, but it's worth the $120 or so a year to me to have an email address I never have to change.

                                  Will Rogers never met me.

Will post my hosting transition there, hopefully it will be less painful but we all know what the chances of that is going to be  Anywho, feel free to move this over there, I might just end up in coding horrors the way things have been going lately :sigh:

I was previously with Gridhost and had similar problems, I had to get administrators to delete my databases. I moved over to Afrihost now, they seem pretty good.

DASP - The hosting is good, the support even better and the forum active. Its easy to quibble about a few dollars but when you add the wasted time with so so service and support its money well spent.

Hi John, I'm using Arvixe. I have a business ASP.NET account with them (similar to the one you're talking about, but with lower contention I guess and licensed for hosting client stuff). They are very good indeed. And you get SQL Express 2008. So you can have 4GB per database (or 10GB if it's the R2 version, which I think it is but I'm sorry, I can't remember and I can't check from work due to some corporate firewall stuff). I would absolutely recommend them and I don't even have an affiliate link to earn me anything by referring you.
