You've had a few painful moments, haven't you? The last time I tried to transfer a domain - from ReadyHosting to Webhost4Life.com, it took nearly a year to get things sorted out! It's such a painful process (needlessly so) that I'd have to be very thoroughly convinced that the move is necessary before I'd attempt it again. That would have to be quite an argument, considering that I've had the domain about 8 years and never hosted a website, for lack of anything interesting to say. Silly, I know, but it's worth the $120 or so a year to me to have an email address I never have to change.

Will post my hosting transition there, hopefully it will be less painful but we all know what the chances of that is going to be  Anywho, feel free to move this over there, I might just end up in coding horrors the way things have been going lately :sigh:

Hi Guys.... I'm at the point of gong bald and sitting with chunks of my hair on the ground next to me with my current hosting company. Following is a brief description of the hell I have been going through the last 2 weeks, so if you want to skip it all, just go to the last two sentences ;) I'm currently doing my hosting via Aplus.net, and the first client that I have where is something involved other than a quick dotnetnuke or wordpress site, a nice little challenge for once, then it turns out a bigger challenge than what I was anticipating. Well... it started that I need a nice sql database, so quickly hop onto their control panel and..... oops, unable to create the domain via the control panel.. get an error. No problem, on chat and they create the domain for me... step one done... domain is registered. Second thing, the database. Back into the control panel to create the database... ooops, unable to create the database via the control panel... get an error. No problem once again on chat, they do something in the backend, ask me to try again, sure thing there I can create the database from the control panel. Nice thing about the package that I have, is that I get a free MSSQL database :-\ , just what I want. Database is created but I'm unable to connect via management studio, back on chat... ok I need IP whitelisting to connect to the database, fine I give them my IP address... while they are busy with whitelisting I get a nice sms, there just went R170 (South African Rand) off my account  . I'm on chat with them so I query this as I'm suppose to get a free database. Yes they tell me, the free database is a 50MB database, and I created a 100MB database, but 100MB was the smallest option that there was, you can choose either 100, 250, 500, 1GB or 2GB database.. Oh they tell me, they will log a support ticket to change the database and then I need to contact their billing department to get the refund. (Still waiting for that to be cleared up) and did I mention that is R170 per month. :omg: :omg: :omg: Now all this happend 2 weeks ago. Every since then I have been having issues connecting to the database where I get that lovely network or instance related error message, so for the last 2 weeks I have been on their chat on a daily basis, re-requesting the IP whitelisting for it appears to reset somehow that they can't explain. So I think it is time for me to move hosting company, so any suggestions for reliable and affordable hosting companies that I can look at? My requirem

I was previously with Gridhost and had similar problems, I had to get administrators to delete my databases. I moved over to Afrihost now, they seem pretty good.

DiscountAsp.Net[^]: been with them for years and, yes, they're a teency bit pricey but never, ever had a problem. Do a search and you may find 6 months half-price coupon. They really are very good.

DASP - The hosting is good, the support even better and the forum active. Its easy to quibble about a few dollars but when you add the wasted time with so so service and support its money well spent.

I was thinking about trying these guys: Arvixe[^] Unlimited disk space, unlimited bandwidth, and all the important ASP.Net stuff - $5/month

Hi John, I'm using Arvixe. I have a business ASP.NET account with them (similar to the one you're talking about, but with lower contention I guess and licensed for hosting client stuff). They are very good indeed. And you get SQL Express 2008. So you can have 4GB per database (or 10GB if it's the R2 version, which I think it is but I'm sorry, I can't remember and I can't check from work due to some corporate firewall stuff). I would absolutely recommend them and I don't even have an affiliate link to earn me anything by referring you.

I've been using www.seekdotnet.com for almost 5 years. Seems good value for money and the turnaround time for support is rather quick.

No way is that as good as it looks, I just did a search for this kind of stuff about a month ago and nobody is offering unlimited disk space or bandwidth. There's something fishy going on there.

We ran the gamut of them before we went to Serverbeach and we've been happy ever since. It's relatively easy to manage your own server and it's *never* down in many years of dealing with them. Also you get lot's of space which you don't on any of the hosted servers unless you pay through the nose extra for it.

$75/month is too expensive for folks like me. I'm currently paying $15/month and I can't even do .net/SQL. That's why the one I mentioned looks so inviting.

Softsys[^] have been working well for me Granted, I've only been using them for a couple of months, but there were far fewer pains setting everything up than I had with other hosting companies (I'd recommend avoiding 1&1), and they are very affordable

I'm using IX Webhosting. Very good. Costs me about $125/year for 3 domains. Pretty cheap - very reliable. www.ixwebhosting.com -Max :D

I use Mochahost and have not had a problem. Their packages are pretty well built out and reasonable. I have had really good service from customer support as well. They are based out of US west coast though if that matters to you. http://www.mochahost.com/[^]

I've been through several hosting companies and hosting solutions and have finally settled on the Virtual Private Server (VPS) option. Rather than just getting a slice of shared web space, you get an entire VM. But the best solution I've found, and the one I currently use, are Hyper-V VMs from Ultima Hosts. It is super stable and I'm very impressed with the performance. You have admin on the VM, so you can install any supporting software you need (SQL Express, etc.). USD $55 for base Hyper-V VPS, $35 for base Virtuozzo VPS. Note: YMMV with Virtuozzo. It's a different kind of virtualization platform and it has its quirks. Hyper-V, for me, has been awesome. Highly recommended.

I recommend Hypermart ( http://hypermart.com ) My web site runs about $8 (US) a month and the service is great. You can set up things like a content manager or a forum (ie. WordPress, Drupal, Jumla, etc.) in minutes and have a fully functioning web site. I code my own HTML web pages and upload via FTP and I use WordPress for a Blog and Simple Machines for a support forum. I have used Hypermart for about 10 years and they are fantastic. They even have fast "Chat" style tech support where you get immediate results and actually talk directly to a real person. Problems can be resolved in minutes, rather than days. It is easy to register domain names (about $11/year) for your web site. Hypermart cators to businesses, small and large. For software developers who want to sell their software online, in combination with Hypermart, I recommend BMT-Micro ( http://bmtmicro.com ) for handling the credit card stuff and taking orders. I have used them for about 10 years now and they are amazing. The services are great. They can even handle sales to the EU and deal with the VAT tax. They handle all sorts of credit cards and other forms of payment. Combine these two and a programmer can start selling his software on the internet within a days time and have the look and feel of a "big" company.

Is the web site in your link on arvixe? If so, that's great, because I can get to it from work (I can't get to my cuirrent web site from work - it's blocked and I don't know why).

When I read the Aplus.net I shuddered. Yep, been there (but just issues with simple domain name and dns stuff years ago). Sorry to hear of the problems. Yes, I'd run away. I recently did due diligence and signed up for two hosts (one for our church and one for my use) with an eye for good DNN hosting and came up with 3essentials.com and ddn4less.com I don't have much to offer of experience yet bus so far so good on set up of DNN and I get sql server with both of these of course for a decent price so it seems to fit your requirements and I thought I'd offer.
