That's what kills me though. I code LOB web apps for a living and my company uses IE. It would be nice if the spell check was already included so I didn't have to use a 3rd party component for it in my programs.

Ah, I understand now. Yes it would be nice to not have to make up the differences/deficiences in the different browser implementations. But, as I've noted before you can get spell check for IE here[^].

I feel your pain. I've had my share of days with plugin development for IE, and I hated every single day of it.

Unbeleivable. No translator either. And you still can't save your profile in the cloud so it is consistent on all your computers. Great job MS with your new version that is already outdated...

I'm not sure I'd count translation as an essential feature, but they could definitely put in a spell check that would kick chrome's ass. I think they've been so focused on the designer community that they just haven't delivered much at all for users.

My guess is that some executive thinks giving away a spell checker will hurt MS Office sales. It seems like Office is the only MS product with a spell checker.

I was just about to post the same thing but found restarting IE after enabling the add-in fixed the issue. Why it couldn't just start working when I enabled it is another story...

There's a spell checker available for WPF applications. TextBoxBase supplies SpellCheck.IsEnabled to add spell check support, and with .NET 4 you can even use custom dictionaries.

I'm still annoyed that you have to use flash to get multiple file uploads working on IE9. With Chrome, Firefox and Safari they support the 'multiple' attribute on the file input tag and also support the FileAPI. So it's super simple to support multiple file uploads natively on those non-IE browsers. Maybe the 9 refers to the number of releases it will take them to catch up to the other browsers? And yes, that number will keep increasing

Good to know. Thanks. I have just put my second Silverlight application into production. Yesterday I started learning MVC 3. I have been doing some tutorials. It is much much easier than the MVVM stuff I've been doing. However, the SL projects have some advantages for sure. I'm so torn as to what to use...

Yes, pretty funny. The desperately need to make a new version of IE that gets updated regularly to keep up with the competition. They should call it IE Fun or something like that. I guess they have to be very careful with IE not to break any of the thousands of Enterprise applications that run in Corporate offices everywhere but when Google Chrome is about to release Version 11 in 3 years, they need to do something.

MS had spent almost a decade not caring about browsers at all. IE9 is the first competitive browser they've had since Mozilla rose from the ashes of nutscrape. Expecting them to get *everything* that they'd ignored for years in a single pass is asking for too much. Because of the glacial rate that IE users upgrade their browsers IMO implementing all the mature HTML5 standards and boosting performance are more important than supporting tools that can be added via plugin. Now that they're more or less caught up, however I'd be concerned if a speel chucker in some form doesn't show up in IE10.

The only reason I can think of is that they are different divisions in MS, so don't speak to each other, although possibly the legal team think that doing this would get them into trouble with the EU, who would force them to integrate the SC with all browsers.

I was just about to post the same thing but found restarting IE after enabling the add-in fixed the issue. Why it couldn't just start working when I enabled it is another story...

Chris, I'm the author of Speckie. The 'other story' is traditional MS functionality; when you click Enable, it doesn't enable it immediately, it marks it as enabled for the next time your start IE.

Maurizio, I bow to you for your wonderful contribution. and sympathise with you for the pain IE's add-in model causes you and your users. Thank you. (So...are you going to write an article on how you wrote it? :D)
