      Need custom software developed? I do custom programming based primarily on MS tools with an emphasis on C# development and consulting.                 In high school I was deep into programming the DEC PDP-8 in assembler and machine code. The PDP-8 used octal for numeric notation. In the evenings I was working at the local movie theater. One slow night I went inot the auditorium and counted up the patrons. 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11. Later out in the lobby, 2 patrons left. The candy girl girl asked how many were left. If everyone left, we could go home early. I said, there were 11, 2 left, that leaves 7. "What school did you go to?" she asked. It was then I realized I had reverted to octal math.

                  Programming a PDP-8 in high school -- you've got to be as old as I am:thumbsup: My high school got hold of a PDP-8/L for a month and we ran it so much that we burnt out the ASR-33 and had to get a replacement. I still remember running the toggle switches to put in the RIM Loader. Thank the gods for the plastic paddles, as most PDP techs had calluses from flipping the metal switches on the other models. Hand-load the RIM Loader, then read in the BIN loader paper tape, then load the FOCAL interpreter tape, then start programming (for the high-level types, or SABRE assembler for the geeks!)

                    Personally, I prefer [ctrl]+d ... much quicker, no extra entries in the .bash_history file. Works in the shell, MySQL, telnet, etc. ...

                      We actually had access to a TSS-8 running on the PDP-8/I and had two ASR-33 teletypes we modemed in at a blistering 10 CPS (110 baud). Every once in a while we got out the center where the machine was housed. And occasionally we had to do the RIM/BIN so the machine knew enough to start reading the highspeed papertape (no DECtapes).                             Try programming outside of any OS environment, using BIOS interrupts :)

                              Octal is good. Using too much hex can make mysterious appear A-F in numbers (not to mention that 0x is not good start for a number in math)

                                Oh yea. I say I will debug the problems with whatever needs fixed, download food when I eat, compile (make) the food for dinner, boot-up the TV and BlueRay player, do a brain dump (UNIX there)... It's funny how I find I'm using all sort of programming slang in every day conversations. Sometimes because that's the only word I can think of! Sad. I know. :^)

                                  Something similar happened with me... was having a conversation with my wife about our kids' education and wanted to say that every kid should know how to read, write, and do arithmetic (the 3 Rs), but almost ended up saying every kid should know how to read, write and execute. :-D
