Friend of my wife died last night, 32 years old, lived alone with her 9 year old daughter. Daughter got herself up and ready this morning, took herself to school and told them she couldn't wake mummy. Sometimes life is just an utter bastard. Sometimes it is on a big scale, sometimes on a small scale. But a bastard none the less.

Every man can tell how many goats or sheep he possesses, but not how many friends.

It is extremely sad. Words cannot describe how sorry I feel for the kid.

Just noticed you are in the UK. So replace 911 with whatever you folks have there that's equivalent.

Sometimes the mind protects itself by denying the truth and making up some explanation to hold on to. I guess it's a mechanism to buy some time to somehow deal with shocking events.

Man, that is rough. Friend of mine died a couple of weeks ago. Late 30's, two young kids...

Yeah possible. She may have freaked out and thought it best to get to school where she'll be with friends.

:wtf: She did not call family, friends or at least 911? Surprising for a 9 year old. I do feel sorry for her, but this is still rather odd behavior.

Na, that's not odd. I think in a distressing situation like that a lot of kids would fall back to doing what they do in their routine. A few might think to phone 911 if they saw something bad happen to a parent but in this case there wasn't anything to see. Cheers, Drew.

My heart goes out to this little girl... :(( I never cease to be amazed by the durability of children. Fate has dealt her a terrible blow, yet she carried on doing what her Mom taught her was the right thing to do. In time, she will feel the loss badly, but with the strength she has already displayed - it had to be very scary to not be able to wake Mommy - I suspect that she will survive and carry on, if only to make her mom proud. My prayers will be with her...:rose:

Friend of my wife died last night, 32 years old, lived alone with her 9 year old daughter. Daughter got herself up and ready this morning, took herself to school and told them she couldn't wake mummy. Sometimes life is just an utter bastard. Sometimes it is on a big scale, sometimes on a small scale. But a bastard none the less.

That's so sad. Is there family who can take her in? My niece was 8 years old when her mother died (she was estranged from my brother in law). Georgia moved in with her father (who'd moved back in with his mother who's now 80), so she's effectively being looked after by a pensioner while her father works. It's been very hard on her, but luckily the school is very understanding and has been a great help to her. Whoever ends up looking after the girl should seek therapy for her. It's a traumatic enough experience for an adult - for a child it's hell.

It may me 999 but I can guarantee they'd be no help on the other end of the line, due to the cuts etc.

A child of a lone parent calls and says she can't wake her mother, and you think there'd be no response? Be serious.
