Part of an e-mail letter that I just got from the Reflector folks (I sprung the $35 for the new version):

Based on a large amount of community feedback we are going to release a
version of .NET Reflector 6 with no expiry date for existing users. This will
be a stripped down version without any of the bug fixes or new features in
version 7 and it will not be supported going forward.

Just FYI (if anyone cares)... [Edit: Clarified that it was e-mail.]

I'm using ILSpy now, and redgate got itself onto my boycott list for their behaviour.

I actually have a paid version of Reflector. I compared ILSpy to it, and while it's good - it has a way to go yet. Once it adds search support, I'd probably be more inclined to use it - it is a fantastic little app, but I really do rely on the ability to search through the methods.

I got the impression that the announcement of the non-expiring version 6 was "imminent". I got the e-mail because I broke down and paid for version 7 a while back. I reasoned that I had gotten enough use out of the free version that I could at least shell out the $35 and support them. They apparently did not want those of us who paid to get all torqued off when we saw the announcement.

Yea it's less good on the whole, some nasty bugs too (not that Reflector hasn't any), at least right now - but it can improve and it's free. Actually I don't really care much that it's free or not, but Redgate just pooped on their users and that really ticked me off. They will never get any of my money.

How do you figure? :~ If you had shelled out a bunch of money for a paid version, and then they announced that said version was now free, I could understand that statement. I agree that having the free version just die after a certain period of time was not the best way to handle it, but they have come to realize that and are now making available the last free version in a non-expiring form. They listened to user feedback in that regard. It's unfortunate that they felt that they could no longer afford to offer a free version, but hey. Companies are in business to make a profit. Someone has to pay the salaries of those developers who work on the product. I can't hold that against their company.

Same here. $35 isn't that much when you figure out how much time you can save with it. The cost to productivity ratio just makes it too cheap to ignore.

They promised to keep it free, remember? First they just tried to break that promise, and now they're scrambling back as far as they can without technically breaking it. It's lame. They won't go broke over it either. They have plenty of other products.

I purchased Reflector and it crashed on me so many times in the first day that I was livid at being conned. I complained and in 24hrs I'd been given a full refund. I then latched onto ILSpy. For sure, it's not perfect and it has a way to go before it becomes a great freeware product but it's on its way and that's a good sign. I don't know why Reflector turned crap. It started at the top and worked it's way downwards under RG's ownership. I'm sure Herr Roeder probably did well out of it so maybe RG have to recover their investment but to be honest it's dropped so low now that it seems to prove the old adage, namely, you can't polish a turd. The best thing they can do is put it out for public consumption. All this talk of giving away a reduced functionality version is crap. Perhaps RG make enough money elsewhere so why they chose to screw us is unfortunate. I'll never buy another RG product and frankly, the bitter taste from having bought once will last a long time in my mouth and longer still in my wallet. I hope ILSpy can maintain enough momentum to raise itself above Reflector.
