You are plain wrong. He does what he is paid for. He should work more if he is paid more.

If either one of you were my employee, you wouldn't last long. I would terminate your employment as soon as your poor work ethic became apparent. If your employment contract specifies you are paid a salary for working 40 hours a week, I expect you to be doing your assigned tasks for each and every one of those 40 hours. If you're an hourly employee, I don't expect you to claim you worked 40 hours when you only worked 37. In either case, once you complete an assignment, you should ask for the next. I shouldn't have to baby you along, asking if you're done before I give you another one. If I don't have an immediate assignment for you, I expect you to be doing something which is of benefit to the company. If you're not meeting these requirements, you're a thief.

Try to understand: you are paid to do something in 8 hours and you finish it in 7; the remaining hour is yours, not boss'

Please. Go and tell your boss this. We look forward to you spending more time here in the lounge once he fires you. If you finish the task in 7 hours, then you have 1 hour to start a new task. You are paid to do a job. This is not a complicated concept. This is not rocket science. This is not even Economics 101. If you are paid for 8 hours work, then you are expected to work for 8 hours.

Sorry mate. As an employer, I find this attitude really, really offensive and I don't want to encourage any bad ideas among the troops.

Of course. If he is that good! The boss wants the job done. He estimates it to last 8 hours. One employee finishes it in 10 hours, so he stays over time. Another finishes it in 5 hours! Congrats! He leaves early! It is the bonus for being proficient!

In a word: cobblers! I have never worked for any company where you would be allowed, let alone expected, to stop work for the day just because you have finished the task you are currently working on. There is always more to do, or at the least more to learn.

He finished the task he was assigned to. He deserves a promotion or a salary raise because he is proficient and quick. If you force the employee do more that he was assigned in the same time, you steal from him. Who is the thief then?

It sounds very attractive. Me and my colleague are given similar tasks. I finish it early. He can not. Why should I be treated the same? It is obvious that I am superior.

Yes, it is strange, indeed. You are programmers. You should be on the programmer's side. Instead, you seem to be on the side of the man who forgot / never knew how to code (the boss).
