    No, not at all: just ask him and, if he hasn't ask him if he will before he leaves and then tell his boss. If you don't ask, you won't get.

      Well resigned, for a better position elsewhere. He hired me 6 months ago, and is now leaving midway until my annual review. I think the tentative plan is to have our team of 3 self manage, because it will be too costly / time consuming to hire an outsider. My question is, should I discuss my progress with him before he leaves? 3 months ago he said I was on pace for a promotion, but with him leaving. I'm not sure if anyone above him knows what my output has been. Is it out of line to ask if he has passed upwards my accomplishments before he leaves?

      I think you can ask for a formal feedback from him before he leaves. Once you are there for your annual review, you can use this feedback for the time your old boss was there. Rest of the time will anyways be evaluated by your then boss.

        Yeah, that's the thing, it looks like we are going to be self managing. So I guess a more specific question is, should I ask HR and my current boss who will be reviewing me in 6 months? I think it's only fair.

          Well, I was on pace for promotion 3 months ago. I just want to be sure I still am in the eyes of whoever will make that call next October/November.

              If the HR says "we", you are done. If they care about your recommendation, suggest customer feedback as the basis of evaluation.

                  If you are self managing, just give yourself the review. It may be tiring running round the desk to ask then answer questions, but it'll be worth it in the long run!

                      Haha, I don't think so. Maybe his boss is being replaced by my boss (we don't have contractors, but his new position is managing only contractors). Also, we got him to tell us where he's going.
