Am thinking of taking up jogging/running as a way to get fit...any advice to an unfit desk jockey (other than don't overdo it)?

Try swimming instead. You get a better overall cardio workout, and the impact/stress is much better.

Depends on whether you are just unfit or grossly overweight and unfit. If the latter, you could easily 'do' your knees and ankles in. So if you can replace the standard jogging with the horizontal type until the weight decreases, you'll probably not bother with other forms of exercise.

Pete suggested swimming as an alternative. I'd suggest rowing as another one. The best part is you get to do this one sitting down. :)

Just build up slowly. Mate of mine was massively over-weight, and when he started he couldn't run at all. Just walked. He walked ever increasing distances at ever increasing speeds. Then he started very slowly jogging a bit, then he started running. Forget how much weight he has lost, but he is quite literally half the man he used to be.

Swimming as Pete suggested or cycling if you want to get out. Running has the habit of fekin your knees.

Running is very good for you. Run faster for the cardio and slower for the fat burn...switch it up as you run. POH made a good point though, it can be hard on your joints for some people. I ran 20 miles a week for years in the military and did not suffer any joint strain or pain. You have to build up in to it. Swimming is good as well and so is rowing. Just remember that none of it will do you any good unless you do it. Diet also is a must. Don't expect to get fit if you are still eating the same way you are now. Good luck. [Sorry Pete] replied to your post instead of OP's. :-O

Never criticize a man unless you've walked a mile in his shoes. That way when you criticize him you're one mile away and he has no shoes.

Don't rush into it. If you have access to a gym, you can use the threadmill just to get into the motion of running. and it's an easier way to move from the "walk fast" to "run" stage. Get a real good pair of shoes; go to a specialized store and let THEM choose the shoe for you. If you run outside, map yourself a small route (google map, or specialized sites like runkeeper) and run it a few times in different session to get to know how your body handles it. This was my last run (2nd outside run of the year): http://runkeeper.com/user/192374754/activity/32714982[^] Other than that, enjoy yourself and it IS ok to hurt after the first few runs.

Also, consider pilates as a way of strenghtening your core muscles (improve your posture, alleviates back pains, avoid arthritis, stretch your body, improve your flexibility, etc. etc. )

I got into pretty good shape when I had an elliptical in my apartment. It's very easy to run while watching your favorite show or movie. And ellipticals are probably better for your joints. I no longer have one (old one got noisy and my new apartment isn't ideal for an elliptical), but this is probably the best way I've ever managed to keep up an exercise routine. It's also fantastic during the winter... no going out in the cold. And between you and me... you can fart as much as you want while exercising in your own home.

I have heard nothing but great things about pilates. However, I fear a loss in man points if I engage in any act of pilateism. :)

Jogging/running is only an ok way to get fit. There are faster and more effective approaches if cardiovascular fitness, strength and appearance are your goals.

Am thinking of taking up jogging/running as a way to get fit...any advice to an unfit desk jockey (other than don't overdo it)?

Change your genes. If I can count on having some of my dad's genes (I'm pretty sure I can, but who knows, right?) I'll never have to do any horrible exercising of any kind.
