He runs 1 mile every day. Unfortunately, he's now 334 miles from home. *boom tish*

Never criticize a man unless you've walked a mile in his shoes. That way when you criticize him you're one mile away and he has no shoes.

Am thinking of taking up jogging/running as a way to get fit...any advice to an unfit desk jockey (other than don't overdo it)?

Don't rush into it. If you have access to a gym, you can use the threadmill just to get into the motion of running. and it's an easier way to move from the "walk fast" to "run" stage. Get a real good pair of shoes; go to a specialized store and let THEM choose the shoe for you. If you run outside, map yourself a small route (google map, or specialized sites like runkeeper) and run it a few times in different session to get to know how your body handles it. This was my last run (2nd outside run of the year): http://runkeeper.com/user/192374754/activity/32714982[^] Other than that, enjoy yourself and it IS ok to hurt after the first few runs.

      Watched code never compiles.

Also, consider pilates as a way of strenghtening your core muscles (improve your posture, alleviates back pains, avoid arthritis, stretch your body, improve your flexibility, etc. etc. )

I got into pretty good shape when I had an elliptical in my apartment. It's very easy to run while watching your favorite show or movie. And ellipticals are probably better for your joints. I no longer have one (old one got noisy and my new apartment isn't ideal for an elliptical), but this is probably the best way I've ever managed to keep up an exercise routine. It's also fantastic during the winter... no going out in the cold. And between you and me... you can fart as much as you want while exercising in your own home.

I have heard nothing but great things about pilates. However, I fear a loss in man points if I engage in any act of pilateism. :)

Jogging/running is only an ok way to get fit. There are faster and more effective approaches if cardiovascular fitness, strength and appearance are your goals.

Try swimming instead. You get a better overall cardio workout, and the impact/stress is much better.

Just build up slowly. Mate of mine was massively over-weight, and when he started he couldn't run at all. Just walked. He walked ever increasing distances at ever increasing speeds. Then he started very slowly jogging a bit, then he started running. Forget how much weight he has lost, but he is quite literally half the man he used to be.

Every man can tell how many goats or sheep he possesses, but not how many friends.

Very important detail. If you're above 300ish(????) pounds jogging or other high impact exercises are an express highway to permanent joint damage and premature arthritis.

Apart from that, once you get past £90(ish) the extra cost doesn't bring any extra benefit, just increased profit for the manufacturer.

And greater risk of injury. Worn out running shoes also cause fewer injuries than brand new shoes. Our species has been running quite well without any kind of special running foot gear.

If you are in the condition that you physically can, I would recommend sprints. Try sprint 1 minutes, walking 1-2 minutes, alternating for a half hour. It will destroy you. It's how I went from 180 to 145 pounds a few years back. When it gets warm out I will do it again, as I've surpassed my old "heavy" weight this winter. I never had the time to run for distances, and running sprints compacts the workout to a shorter time period. Also, runners get accustomed to running distances, their body gets more efficient and expels less energy (eventually you will burn less calories per same distance and pace). Sprinting helps counter this.

Pecan shells and some small rocks are the worst that I get in my neighborhood. If I'm running somewhere unfamiliar I'll wear a pair of 5 fingers[^]. Yes they are expensive, but I do most of my running full on barefoot, so they don't wear out that often, plus I get a fitness allowance at work to pay for them.

And greater risk of injury. Worn out running shoes also cause fewer injuries than brand new shoes. Our species has been running quite well without any kind of special running foot gear.
