If you had gone through recent Lounge threads, you'd probably have had second thoughts about asking career advice here.

    Regards, Nish

It's easy. Just write on your CV that you've got 10 years experience each with Oracle, Sybase, MSSQL, Foxpro, and Access, learn a few buzzwords, and send it to every employer who requires a DBA. That's what most of the 20-25-year-old applicants I interview seem to do, anyway.

Don't worry too much about the down votes. Other forums would be more correct, but we're all humans and make mistakes and others are humans that don't have patience with those that make mistakes :-). To answer your question, personally I believe the best way to become dba is get certified in most cases this will be Oracle or SQL Server (mostly it is or one or the other, not both). In both cases you'll also need a good knowledge of OS systems (Linux/Unix or Windows), virtualization etc... Get some advice from people you know, read books, follow courses if possible and take the exams. hope this helps.

As if to reinforce my earlier post, today's MSSqlTips Newsletter has this[^] article, that you may find useful.

Sandeep sent him here http://www.codeproject.com/Answers/190421/Hi-team-I-want-to-become-a-DBA-so-please-suggest-m.aspx[^] after he posted this as a Q&A this morning. The OP appears to have voted him down for it, but there you go...

Actually, professional questions aren't quite right for the Lounge. I think they would be best placed here[^].

You're correct. The work and training issues would be the best place for this query, and I think the 1 votes on your post are unfair (I'll counter with a 5). However, like I said, it's not a topic that's "unacceptable" in the lounge, and redirecting the OP to GIT is totally meaningless.

Do you have a DBA in your company ? Then I recommend poison on the keyboard keys.

                    1. Get a book and start reading about database administration. 2. Tell your boss/supervisor about your aspiration and ask if there is a position for in the company. You may need to be patient if there is none. 3. Check if your company provides any kind of support or guidance. Make use of it and gradually change your role.
