Hey everyone I know its depressed economy but things are getting better, I am simply unhappy with price trend in freelance market space, people come there with huge requirement and tiny budget. something like we want a clone of a web site and budget will be 110$ max. Is this some kind of a joke going, any way some collage kid takes up the project give it a short can not complete it and vanish in middle way. Guru Mantra is If you throw peanuts you will get monkeys. This marketplace is way to unfair and volatile as well. You spend last 1 year or 2 reaching the top and one miser buyer, mr. Scrooge raise and arbitration gets his money back and leave you with tarnished reputation, you sit there helpless and thinking whats next. 1. know what the project parameter are, and how much time and effort you will actually need to complete it.(and offcourse factor in your o0wn profit margins) 2. In Writings: get the client signature on said parameters. 3. should the client decline to sign a written contract stating those variables. DO NOT TAKE THE JOB! following these 3 rules has ensured both my reputation and a steady stream of respectable projects for me to work on .

Really great. If you accept a project, you also have to accept the responsibility. You can't just run away. That sheds really bad light on all developers. Maybe you should have prepared a proper agreement with your client, that explicitely states, what your tasks are (technical specifications)?

Thats funny, I am just bringing it your attention IT people are being paid lesser than a labourer on these freelance websites, please dont bid make it a habit to bid really low, have some respect for the profession

I have. I have respect for every profession. If somebody doesn't want to pay for our prices, then they won't get our quality. Easy. Quality has its price (of course a bit of haggling is always okay).

Actually, there are a few billion individuals living in slums, working in Internet Café's with a free version of Visual Studio willing to do the work For less than my morning coffee. Yet I still make a lot of bank. I must be doing something right.

Yes, you're right, anybody can be an "instant" website designer, a GUI consultant, a graphic designer, an SEO specialist who will guarantee your Google rankings ... these days ... it's a "barrel of monkeys," I think, but in the long-run the old models of craftsmanship and standards, that used to apply, for example, in the pre "desktop publishing," and "pre-internet," times, for example: in the world of ink on paper ... those are turned topsy-turvy now ... they just don't work anymore: I don't think that means that new forms of standards of excellence will not develop in "novel" ways that perhaps people like me, put-out-to pasture technically :), can't imagine now. By the way, Gore Vidal said this, in his novel "Kalki:" "Christianity was never exactly a barrel of monkeys when it came to the here and now." I'm sure I don't need to tell you who Kalki is within Indian culture/religion, or how little of Indian culture/religion Gore Vidal understood. But, if the world will end in 2012, as the current crop of doomsday nutters are predicting, I would rather meet Kalki, than other alternative apocalypses. But, perhaps the "suckers who are born every minute" (P. J. Barnum) get what they deserve and you are damn lucky not to have clients who want it on the cheap. And, can't your portfolio can speak for itself ? Yes, I think thats an ice breaker, in a study it was shown how freelance market place is causing billion of dollars. If you as an entrepreneur thinks that you will be able to get a good product developed by a team of freelancers than you are nothing short of being an idiot. Its high time we as a community should discourage online market place.

That's why I never bother with those sites. Most of the work I get comes from word-of-mouth from previous clients or friends in the industry. Even then there is an overall downward trend in the rates people are willing to pay lately, but I've managed to get along fine.
