How do people do things like this to their own children. I will never understand it. Yet another reason to ban religion - in this case Hinduism, but every stupid religion has some stupid, outdated and often damn right archaic customs.

Unfortunately mate, the Hindu religion has nothing to do with this. There is absolutely no text sacred or evil that even remotely suggests female infanticide. And Hinduism has 33 million gods, half of which are female. The female infanticide custom largely sprang in the 19th century when dowries were given out in ornaments and wealth rather than the cows and grains which the bride is sent to the husbands home with. Since most folks were farmers, it was considered good fortune for the bride, an incarnation of the goddess of wealth, to bring in grains, seeds and cows which were signs of prosperity. Giving such stuff away as dowry was not a problem for most farmers. But when this was substituted with gold and money, stuff harder to procure, things started turning out to bad for female children. You may be an atheist and not care, but this is an evil social custom rather than a religious one.

The east simply does not value human life or human individuality the way the west does.

That's utter crap; and the east, west, north and south knows that.

The point I made about religion was because that article mentioned that it is "Hindu custom to pay large dowries". So what's their answer? Do they shun a stupid religion? No, they kill their firstborns if they're girls.

The article is wrong, written by people who have no real knowledge of either Hinduism or life in rural India. Pretty much any family, belonging to any religion, has to cough up a dowry when marrying off a girl child. It's not so bad in the urban cities, and families which are educated or generally well off decent people.

You really are way off base here. Women were often prized for the bridal price they could bring it. Look it up.

No I am not. In the culture underdiscussion its the opposite. They are seen as expensive. In the west it is still the father of the bride who pays for the wedding. This itslef reflects the same mentality. Like I said, its not religious, its ciultural.

Thank you, you just confirmed what I said. Its got nothing to do with religion, its cultural. And in fact it pisses me off when I see people picking on religion mistaking it for culture.

Is there really any reason to be this stupid other than old cultural norms? There's nothing like culturally accepted cruelty to start the day. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110504/ap_on_re_as/as_india_no_country_for_little_girls[^]

Agreed, however is many cases religion and culture are so tightly wound together it is hard to see the difference, even for those who are part of the religion/culture in question.

Yes, its often hard to differentiate, and in fact religion becomes tainted with culture to such an extent the same religions can appear very different in different parts of the world.
