At least its fixable with a firmware update.......Remember the Seagate fiasco of a couple of years ago, again, firmware fixable and the drives are still going fine........ Now if it had been a hardware issue........

That's nice. I have two 1.5TB drives from Seagate, and the "fix" did NOT fix them. I've got two bricks I paid a total of $375 for. Both drives still reset themselves far too often to be used in a RAID configuration. After I applied the "fix" they sent, they kept telling me that it was my controllers (ALL OF THEM!) that had the problem, even though the WD's I replaced them with work fine. Oh, they also told me that the drives were never meant to be used in a RAID environment, even though they specified Desktop RAID in their marketing info on the drives. I won't be buying any Seagates again until they completely overhaul their customer service and actualy own up to their own mistakes.

Did you apply the fix to fix the fix? If i remember there were two updates that came out in quick succession. I had 3 drives in the affected series and not seen any issues from them. (applying the fix was a pain in the butt though).

So, I have a pair of these in Raid 1 in a DLink DNS-323 NAS (with its own idle setting). These are the 1TB size (I don't have the model number with me). Do I do it?

This is going to be fun. I've got two in my WHS box, but it doesn't have (nor can I easily add) video out...

There wasn't a second fix 6 months after I applied the first one. Frankly, I haven't looked since. I needed that drives that worked NOW, not when Seagate finally got off their ass and quitely whispered "We MAY have a problem with certain drives", just waiting for people to call them up and complain before they distribute a fix to that one person. I've still got the drives. Maybe I'll hook them back up sometime this week, get all the model and S/N's off them, and see if they've got something to say, ... again.

Well, I picked up the SD1B update last week and installed both drives in my main machine. The firmware upgrade went in without any trouble. I resetup the drives in RAID1 and formatted, then started copying a ton of stuff to the drives to work them over a bit. Now, about once every few minutes, you can here one of the drives reset itself. It can be either of them and theres an audible "click" when it happens. It turns out that the fix doesn't really it. It just prevents the last command from failing and breaking the RAID. There's still a noticable, albeit very short, delay when the "click" happens, so it didn't really "fix" the drives, but hid the problem.
