5.4 Earthquake in Spain this morning,

It had a 4.5 or some such recently, so that must have been yesterdays. This one was 6:45 or so in the morning.

I only heard about yesterday's with about ten people dead, near Murcia, but then I don't follow the news frequently, only listening to the brief radio news in the car on my way to work. Interesting links, by the way.

Yeah, its funny how much activity there is away fomr the plate edges, at relatively shallow depths. The question I have, is why? You would expect activity towards the center of a plate to be deeper than at the edges, due to the thickness of the plate, and that quakes are due to the friction between a plate and another object. So why so many shallow ones towards the center where the plate ought to be reasonably immobile. Unless it isnt of course, and across plates there are inumerable small fissures, each one of which can move slightly causing small quakes. Anyway, this is the worst in England, hit france too, it was just off the shore of Calais in the channel: http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tremblement_de_terre_du_6_avril_1580[^] The worst in France was a 6.8 not far from where I live in 1909! Now I know why the house has steel bands in the foundaitons and at first floor level! :)

Spain isn't that far from a fault line: There is one between Morocco and Gibraltar separating the Eurasian plate from the African one, geologically the distance isn't that great. http://www.worldatlas.com/aatlas/infopage/tectonic.htm[^] As for quakes nearer the centre, the whole plate has to move and there is friction with the layer underneath, these don't tend to be deep as it is just those two layers involved. At the edges you get deeper, more violent and more frequent quakes, as you'd exepect.

Where's that then? Looking at the map you linked to, there doesn't seem to be much activity in Picardie, which is where I live, but I'd be interested to know all the same...

Where's that then? Looking at the map you linked to, there doesn't seem to be much activity in Picardie, which is where I live, but I'd be interested to know all the same...

[^] Aparently Scotland had a 3.5 on Sunday, January 23, 2011 at 06:02:49! France, none since last summer, near Paris. There are quakes all around the edge of the Mediterranean basin as Africa is slowly crunching its way north to close the sea off entirely and replace it with a line of mountains over the next ~50M years.
