I was sort of listening to the BBC news last night and during the broadcast about Turkey and the EU, they said someone made a statement such as "Muslims have no place in the EU". To say the least, I went WTF, but they didn't say who said it or anything else about the statement. So does anybody know anything about this? Was this an official talking or just some nut on the street? Tim Smith I'm going to patent thought. I have yet to see any prior art.

So does anybody know anything about this? Was this an official talking or just some nut on the street? If I remember correctly, mr Giscard D'Estaing, former french presidend and currently presidend of the committee that should write a draft for the european costitution, said something about the fact that all the countries that compose the EU have "cristian roots" and cristian parties has (and still have) a role in the history of many of them (only the UK is a bit different from this point of view), and that the joining of a muslim country could be a problem. I don't understand his opinion and he was very happy to receive gifts from mr. Bokassa (former president of center-african republic), even if he was not exacly a good cristian... :) Right now some countries (Germany, Austria and Greece) didn't have a positive opionion about Turkey joining the EU, but I think that this is more for economical and political reasons (Greece and Turkey have bad relationship since the Turkish military intervention in Cyprus, another country that will join the EU soon). Turkey removed some of the problems that prevents his acceptance from the EU (mostly related to human rights), and they expressed some signs of good will (banning death penalty, giving to the kurdish people the right to speak and teach their own language) but that's not enough to fix a date for their joining. -- Looking for a new screen-saver? As I said, it was just a line on a BBC news report (TV). I tried looking on the BBC website this morning, but found nothing. Tim Smith I'm going to patent thought. I have yet to see any prior art.

4 or 5 millions of muslims live here, in France. If a french said that, it's a call to the civil war. I would rather bet for an angry turkish diplomat EU has still a muslim component, and it will grow when EU will accept in the future Bosnia and Albania. It's not really the point. EU is IMO more affraid of a country where the "republic" is guaranteed by the Army, where there are military operations against Kurd civilians/terrorists (make your choice), and where Human Rights are, at least, still abused.

it will be probably very hard for albania. I think others balkan states will integrate EU as soon as they will have recover from the different wars. Do you think there's some progress on this point ?

The underlying question is: "Turkey into the EU -yes or no". Sure they want in - but there's lots of both emotional and economical reasons to say no. Only (almost) noone does because it would be "politically incorrect". The only ones that open their mouth is the conservative religious corner, that considers the EU pretty much a christians club. We already have quite some Muslims in the EU, thank you.
