"Can't live without" is a bit too strong, but I really like to have: vim a decent debugger a decent compiler (except for interpreted languages, of course) a decent source control system OneNote (or some other decent note management system - I am not aware of anything coming close to OneNote) internet connection a decent web browser (Chrome, IE9) a decent mail/calendar/task client (Outlook is kind of OK)

ah OneNote, Use it, forgot to mention it. Also, Evernote and Springpad come to mind. springpadit.com it is nearly as good as onenote, and works on more systems.

Getting attached to software that isn't likely to be pre-installed on a system you are likely to use is a bad idea. You should learn to make the most of the least. Having said that... Borland's command-line C/C++ MinGW C/C++ (the pre-compiler only really) ActivePerl QVTterm My command-line database (-agnostic) tool My XSLT utility A bottle of cheap tequila.

In addition to many of the tools mentioned in the other responces I ues Frhed (Free Hex Editor) to view the contents of binary files. And WinMerge as a stand alone text file comparison tool. Both are "Freeware".
