I was just discussing with a new programmer and I always install the following. Virtual Clone Drive 7-zip System Internals WinDirStat What do you use? That might be good for him. I am so used to these they are just my stand by utilities on any windows machine. http://rnbergren.blogspot.com
Any decompiler. I would have lost my previous job if it had not been for a decompiler...

I was just discussing with a new programmer and I always install the following. Virtual Clone Drive 7-zip System Internals WinDirStat What do you use? That might be good for him. I am so used to these they are just my stand by utilities on any windows machine. http://rnbergren.blogspot.com
Visual Studio 2003 SP1 and 2008 SP1. Inno Setup[^], probably the best installer tool set ever made. Paint.NET[^] Process Explorer[^] from the SysInternals tool set. ZoomIn.exe from Visual C++ 6.0. Trace Viewer, an in-house debugging tool for distributed applications.

ah Paint.net I use GIMP. But is does stand to reason that you need some picture editing tool. I also love color picker. http://www.iconico.com/colorpic/[^] I was already assuming Visual Studio and the assorted MS tools that most of us use anyway. SQL Mgmt Studio etc...

"Can't live without" is a bit too strong, but I really like to have: vim a decent debugger a decent compiler (except for interpreted languages, of course) a decent source control system OneNote (or some other decent note management system - I am not aware of anything coming close to OneNote) internet connection a decent web browser (Chrome, IE9) a decent mail/calendar/task client (Outlook is kind of OK)
