    I was just discussing with a new programmer and I always install the following. Virtual Clone Drive 7-zip System Internals WinDirStat What do you use? That might be good for him. I am so used to these they are just my stand by utilities on any windows machine. http://rnbergren.blogspot.com

      It's hard to categorize firearms. They cool be tools, toys, sporting equipment, or even sexual aids. :)

                  Fundamental rules of engineering: If it moves and it's not supposed to, use duct tape. If it doesn't move and it's supposed to, use WD40.

                    Visual Studio 2003 SP1 and 2008 SP1. Inno Setup[^], probably the best installer tool set ever made. Paint.NET[^] Process Explorer[^] from the SysInternals tool set. ZoomIn.exe from Visual C++ 6.0. Trace Viewer, an in-house debugging tool for distributed applications.

                        ah Paint.net I use GIMP. But is does stand to reason that you need some picture editing tool. I also love color picker. http://www.iconico.com/colorpic/[^] I was already assuming Visual Studio and the assorted MS tools that most of us use anyway. SQL Mgmt Studio etc...

                                "Can't live without" is a bit too strong, but I really like to have: vim a decent debugger a decent compiler (except for interpreted languages, of course) a decent source control system OneNote (or some other decent note management system - I am not aware of anything coming close to OneNote) internet connection a decent web browser (Chrome, IE9) a decent mail/calendar/task client (Outlook is kind of OK)

                                        ah OneNote, Use it, forgot to mention it. Also, Evernote and Springpad come to mind. springpadit.com it is nearly as good as onenote, and works on more systems.
