Never mind the rapture, worry about the aliens...

So I watched this[^] over the last few days (was broadcast last week 20th must be a repeat). Anyway, I was struck by how completely dumb it was: the only reason they could come up with that aliens would want to invade was to strip the planet of plant and animal life. Plus, it was pretty much like independence day mixed with war of the worlds (bacteria can work both ways). So, it got me thinking: why would aliens come here and what would their intentions be? 1: Simple explorers - mean us no harm - sorry for causing any trouble, first contact, blah, blah. 2: We need planets for our people (if aliens existed and were here we'd already be dead if that were the case). 3: They're hungry. (same as 2). Anyone care to add any other plausible reasons why aliens would care to come here/invade us? It can't be for raw materials; easier to get those from uninhabited planets/asteroids and they wouldn't want us as slave labour - if they were advanced enough to get here they'd have robots to do their grunt work and robots don't need food and don't fight back. Sorry, I have no idea why I even think of this nonsense. :)

well I can't speak for the others, but I came here purely for the Theakston's old Peculiar. (I do believe that a shipload or two did land at one point around Putney in London, but were so horrified by the paucity of real ale, that they upped and left)

You really want to start that here? You should take a long hard look at your own country before trying to blame others for your own shortcomings, abject failures and prejudices.

I was standing watching a tropical storm the other day and wondered what an alien who had never seen clouds before would think of the huge thunderheads I was watching. I figure it would scare the crap out of anyone without experience of clouds!

You're actually reacting to your own blind prejudices and patent lack of knowledge. You live in one of the most backward countries in the world that is, in part, funded by the west (the west gives you money for schools, amongst other things, so that your people can be educated) and you rail against them? Talk about biting the hand that feeds. Anyway, if you're happy in the 14th century you're welcome to it - you wouldn't like it here anyway, far too much freedom.

Why did humans travel to different countries / continents? Or for that matter, what would be our reason for visiting other planets? Looking for somewhere better to live / exploit. And in the same way first contact is likely to be with an explorer rather than an invasion fleet. Either that or Douglas Adams will have it right, and the we'll effectively become the Alien Australia, receiving a space ship full of undesirables from somewhere smart enough to get rid of them.
Every man can tell how many goats or sheep he possesses, but not how many friends.
