So I watched this[^] over the last few days (was broadcast last week 20th must be a repeat). Anyway, I was struck by how completely dumb it was: the only reason they could come up with that aliens would want to invade was to strip the planet of plant and animal life. Plus, it was pretty much like independence day mixed with war of the worlds (bacteria can work both ways). So, it got me thinking: why would aliens come here and what would their intentions be? 1: Simple explorers - mean us no harm - sorry for causing any trouble, first contact, blah, blah. 2: We need planets for our people (if aliens existed and were here we'd already be dead if that were the case). 3: They're hungry. (same as 2). Anyone care to add any other plausible reasons why aliens would care to come here/invade us? It can't be for raw materials; easier to get those from uninhabited planets/asteroids and they wouldn't want us as slave labour - if they were advanced enough to get here they'd have robots to do their grunt work and robots don't need food and don't fight back. Sorry, I have no idea why I even think of this nonsense. :)

I did state reason 3 being that they are hungry: patently they've run out of bacon. :-)

well I can't speak for the others, but I came here purely for the Theakston's old Peculiar. (I do believe that a shipload or two did land at one point around Putney in London, but were so horrified by the paucity of real ale, that they upped and left)

I was standing watching a tropical storm the other day and wondered what an alien who had never seen clouds before would think of the huge thunderheads I was watching. I figure it would scare the crap out of anyone without experience of clouds!

You're actually reacting to your own blind prejudices and patent lack of knowledge. You live in one of the most backward countries in the world that is, in part, funded by the west (the west gives you money for schools, amongst other things, so that your people can be educated) and you rail against them? Talk about biting the hand that feeds. Anyway, if you're happy in the 14th century you're welcome to it - you wouldn't like it here anyway, far too much freedom.

Why did humans travel to different countries / continents? Or for that matter, what would be our reason for visiting other planets? Looking for somewhere better to live / exploit. And in the same way first contact is likely to be with an explorer rather than an invasion fleet. Either that or Douglas Adams will have it right, and the we'll effectively become the Alien Australia, receiving a space ship full of undesirables from somewhere smart enough to get rid of them.

Every man can tell how many goats or sheep he possesses, but not how many friends.

Anyway, if you're happy in the 14th century you're welcome to it - you wouldn't like it here anyway, far too much freedom.

...because the bloke who sells the stuff to them has a mate in the British Government. But the effect is much the same.

Holy Moly dude, I've seen skating on thin ice, but you've taken it to new levels. Bravo. I lived in the US for a year and a half, and visited many other times. Seems like a pretty peaceful place to me. It has it's share of nutters, but I never had any trouble. Germany has a considerable US military presence, seems pretty peaceful to me, despite it's ...shall we say..questionable past. On the other hand, I wouldn't dream of visiting your country. Tell yourself that your problems are all someone else's fault if it helps you get through the day, but you guys got issues. Any explaination for what this has to do with the USA? -Richard

Fallacy: Single Entity Presumption When talking about a huge entity, be it "Unilever corporation", "the US", or "the aliens", it is tempting but ultimately misleading to assume they are a single entity. Rather, they are a balance of sub-entities with their own goals desires and plans, often conflicting. Plausible scenario: the leading Gagh-fgha party has until now ignored interplanetary issues, but since elections are pending, they'll campaign to allow harvesting and import of humanoid tissue for key industries (as requested by the food & pr0n conglomerate). This pretty much shoots down the "would already have happened" argument. Besides the discovering us, running out of other resources, or a different binding to what we call "time".
