While I'd like to think the parents have their childrens' best interests in mind, I can't help but feel they seem to be giving more weight to their agenda. :sigh: /ravi

Strange... I'm just guessing, but they won't be able to keep that up for long, so why bother? As soon as the child is sent to nursery, the child and the surroundings will have to become aware of the child's gender.

Almost, but not quite, entirely unlike... me...

Gender is overrated! I used to have pink curtains when I was a baby. An aunt told my parents it would certainly make me gay. I am not gay and I can't even remember any pink curtains... Although my MSN font has been pink for years now (which lead to some funny discussions, once again emphesizing this whole 'gender thing') and I did play as Princess Peach when I played Super Mario Kart Wii last weekend

                            It's an OO world.

Most people don't assert their gender until about 5 or 6 years old, effectively gender neutral until then, so I cannot understand why they would keep secret something that is fluid and changing. Odd. I suspect, though, that once more the puritans have asserted the word gender for the word sex, because in the vapid mindset of the 17th Century Party-poopers, the word sex has terrible connotations. It's a baby it has no understanding of gender, so it does not make a difference either way. When he or she gets older it will enquire out of natural curiosity what is this thing in my undies, and why does it look diffrent to yours. Nature will take care of it.

Well, it sure could - depending on the circumstances. I mean, when kids are real young, they really don't care. As they get to about 5 yrs old, peer pressure starts to segregate them. At that point, if the kid wants to wear boys clothes and the parents don't let it, then that's starting to be a real problem. When you think about it, though, the peer pressure is what is wrong, it shouldn't matter. Lord knows, when I dress as a woman, I get enough abuse, so I think I know what I'm talking about.

A friend of mine (now sadly deceased) was given a girls name and dressed as a girl by his mother (who had sons and wanted a daughter) for the first years of his life. He did turn out to be gay (related or not I have no idea either way) and spent many years battling issues from those early times. He was known by all apart from his family under a different name of course, and his funeral was a very tense affair with his family trying to deny one existence that his friends had embraced completely for so long.

Every man can tell how many goats or sheep he possesses, but not how many friends.

A friend of mine (now sadly deceased) was given a girls name and dressed as a girl by his mother (who had sons and wanted a daughter) for the first years of his life. He did turn out to be gay (related or not I have no idea either way) and spent many years battling issues from those early times. I see that differently, though. The kid was treated as a girl - not as gender-independent.
