Yet again I've been penalised by our local council, this time I was taking my family out for a afternoon meal in Manchester. Whilst driving through traffic and I mean there were cars infront and behind me I was CCTVed during in a bus lane during hours of operation. F*ck I was following traffic and I didn't realise it was a bus lane. A nice £30 fine thank you. They must of caught 100s of cars that day judging by the CCTV picture and the number car infront and behind me. I do hope to win the lottery so I can get the hell out of the UK.

Is there any way to fight a ticket in UK land? In Americatown if you go before a judge to contest the ticket you can sometimes get it dismissed or at least reduced.

Is that not much more expensive than the fine itself? I have met one guy (a pretty stupid one let me say) who went to ribunals to fight a fine and he spent more than double of the fine cost to win the case... he won, but... X| PS: He was not specially stupid for having fought that fine... that did not helped to improve his mental level, but this was not the reason of my comment.

You don't have to spend anything to contest, aside from your time. The courts are so busy here that just showing up and acting like you will fight it will get the prosecutor to drop or reduce charges. It happened to my girlfriend. However since you were caught on CCTV, and don't have the right to face the government witness in the UK, it might not work out. In the States, if the officer that pulled you over doesn't show at court, you are free.

more than a few people have gotten red light camera tickets dropped due to the picture being of poor quality. the defense? "that's not me driving" there have been a few stores about people wearing stupid masks as well and nobody could prove they were driving the car since they were not actually pulled over.

You can fight it in the UK, and (with parking particularly) it is quite frequent to win your case. In the case of driving in a bus lane, it is very unlikely that you would win (ignorance of the fact it is a bus lane could be taken as driving without due care and attention) so it probably isn't worth fighting - particularly as you often get the fine reduced by 50% if you pay within 30 days or so.

They changed the law in my state so that running a red light is no longer a moving violation, but is now a compliance violation. This means that the ticket is issued to the registered owner regardless of the driver.

wouldn't be surprised if the rest followed suit, as its really the only way to make the ticket stick.

At least it has no points - so it doesn't up your insurance, or risk your licence! Bloody annoying though - I got a parking ticket when visiting an old lady in hospital because they were rebuilding and had dug up all the car parks. Looked like about 50 or so cars along with mine...

Gotta be honest, I don't have a lot of sympathy if the ticket is correct and above board. Pay more attention to where you're driving rather than just following the crowd and you won't get a ticket. The excuse you're giving is no better than hitting a cyclist/motocyclist and saying you didn't see them, you're driving a car so pay real, actual attention to what you're doing. Given that in the City Centre there are retractable bollards that allow passage to only authorised vehicles however, it could have been far worse...
