fat_boy got deleted, then Fat_Boy got reported as a troll, and he got deleted, so fat__boy has incarnated. :) Ger Hayden is obviously someone who doesnt mind discussing what has oft beenn touted as the defining issue of our generation. Unlike some here. :)

I thought that global temperature was linked to the number of pirates. :-D Changes in sunspot activity that apparently cause temperature changes on Earth don't cause corresponding temperature changes on Mars, so I am suspicious of claims of a direct link.

Mars is a) much further away and b) has a very much thinner atmosphere and c) has no ocean to stabilise the temperature.

If (c) was a factor then sunspots should have more of an effect.

No, for it is dynamic stability. Otherwise we would be boiling all day and freezing at night. The sunspots are indicators of a long term solar output, not the cause of the fluctuations.

Must admit - that had escaped me. ...Although I am thinking of another one for the end of the month where I draw reference to a weatherman whose 'scientific forcasting' had prediced temperatures of up to 33 C for these parts this month. Most days we are lucky to get 13 C... I wonder how he gets if funding

I don't discuss it because I know enough to know that I don't know enough about the science behind the global warming debate to be able to have a reasoned discussion on it; so I leave the topic well alone.

But the average day and night-time temperatures would have changed with sunspot activity if there was a link, and they didn't.

Mars does not have a water vapour atmosphere that can form clouds thus the interplay between cosmic rays and solar wind is not the same. However, in respect of the variability of the suns production of heat, then this does affect mars: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2007/02/070228-mars-warming.html[^]

No, for it is dynamic stability. Otherwise we would be boiling all day and freezing at night. The sunspots are indicators of a long term solar output, not the cause of the fluctuations.

Yeah, between the oceans and the atmosphere we have a relatively stable diurnal temperature. The moon by comparison, the same distance from the sun goes from -150 to +100. As for the relative strengths of the sea and atmosphere, consider the Sahara which has a very dry, ie low GH gas, atmosphere above it. -10 to +50 or so is the resulting range.
