Even if she understood and accepted the price she would pay? The decision not to act is a decision in itself. Was this right? No. Was it the lesser wrong? That is the difficult one since it is clear the original from the rapist's attitude attack wasn't a one off.

Oh, I agree with completely. I was referring to the fact that we, as a people, are not allowed to do what must be done because it would eventually lead to complete Anarchy and chaos. I, personally, don't see anything wrong with what she did but that's me.

Bet the tart was dressed like a slaper, had taunted him all night and was asking for it. (Disclaimer: Every thing said in this post is a joke and in no way portrays the real feeling of the poster) .

Do you know that a burglar can sue you (and win) for hurting them while you are defending your family and property from the intruder? (United States). There is no justice. Justice is a theory and has no proof.

There is one positive thing from this thread - instead of an argument we had a reasonable discussion. Even if we had fundamentally disagreed I am pleased to say I would have respected your opinion in this matter. Scary innit?

A completely different case - partly because he had repeatedly threatened to shoot any police officer who walked up the path to his house. For this reason alone he should not have had a shotgun. Also, he shot the burglar as the burglar was leaving so the threat was no longer there and had refused to report any crimes to the police so the police couldn't do anything.

I didn't say it was not murder. I said that I don't think that it was "cold blooded" murder; I personally think their is a big difference between the two. Cold-blooded murder, to me, is when a person murder's someone for no reason. I think she had a good enough reason and if I was the judge I may have given her 6 month's probation and a medal of honor.

And if you did, I would be happy to hear that you ended up behind bars for the rest of your life.
I could be wrong here, I usually am, but I'm going to guess that you don't have any children of your own.

Not really the dictionary definition("without emotion or feeling; dispassionate; cruel"), but then I didn't really use it very well either. It wasn't emotionless, but it was cruel.

Never a good reason for murder. Understandable, but not justifiable. Absolutely nothing honorable about burning someone to death.

All the more reason to not leave them hurt. Castle doctrine FTW.

Exactly. However, it is not your responsibility to dish out justice therefore you are wrong and always will be wrong in thinking so and acting so. One of the greatest crimes against humanity IMHO.

It's the Billy Budd scenario once again. I would argue that the law does not determine what is a good action or an evil action. It determines the (il)legality which is far from being the same thing. Nonetheless your point that we either have rule by law or rule by men and the later ultimately offers less good for the greater number is well made.

Have you or someone close to you that you love been raped? Has someone close to you been deliberately killed in a violent way? Has either of those happened to someone that you were specifically supposed to be looking out for (such as a child)? If you answer is no then perhaps someone to which that has happened might have a different viewpoint.

Why did a rapist get a 3 day "pass" that allowed him (rapist serving time) to legally enter a crowded bar? Why weren't the victims notified of his release or "pass"? What he said could be seen as intimidating/threatening a witness/victim, I hope she gets a good lawyer. If OJ walked, so could she.

You still have to be convicted by a jury of peers in this country, thankfully. If you live in an area where citizens have at least half a brain, and aren't crooks themselves, (ie: not Chicago) you'll probably walk.

Except perhaps in cases where the ones supposedly handling the icky jobs we've delegated to them aren't quite good enough at them. A rapist out on a weekend pass? Excuse me?

A girlfriend I had as a teenager worked as a cleaner and was raped while cleaning the house of an acquaintance. A friend and I waited for him outside his house one night and beat the living shit out of him. We were arrested and went to court as minors, no conviction was recorded for either of us. The rapist got 5 years. I heard a few years ago he still walks with a limp. Looking back on that episode of my life I wish I'd acted differently but the fucker got what was coming to him. To be more correct I received a 12 month suspended sentence and a good behaviour bond. Had I of re-offended in that time I would have served the 12 months in addition to any punishment for the new offence. The judge stipulated that should the good behaviour bond expire without further offence the conviction was to be struck off the public record.
