Now there is a band name! Actually, MythBusters looked at the "exploding dinner roll" story, and found that it would not likely happen until after several hours in a sealed car that reached over 150F. Any passenger would be dead by the time the canister exploded.

Well, they're wrong. I had one of them self-open at room temp less than 30 minutes after coming out of the fridge. Scared the bejeebers out of my wife. On a related note, a bottle of sparkling wine shot its cork in the same manner, just sitting there on the table. "Chateau Wink", whose slogan should be "It's ;) champagne". Nasty stuff, but was cheap and contained alcohol. Can't ask for much more than that.

You know, I've been told to my face I can't be an engineer because I'm blonde. How about some black jokes then?

You know, there is a perception that because I'm a redhead I have a temper. That really ticks me off. Seriously though, would you want to work for somebody who doesn't understand that blonde jokes are not based on reality? EDIT: I assumed it was a potential employer, though it could be somebody else, like a teacher... that would annoy me, because they'd be giving the wrong impression to impressionable minds.

It shouldn't. I don't think anybody here thinks it should. But you seem to be making the point that the jokes are responsible for that person's stupidity. I'm certain that even without jokes people would still be just as stupid. Phrased another way, don't hate the player, hate the game. Actually, you should probably hate both, but at least don't hate the ball.

My recommendation is to hold stupid people accountable rather than people looking to get a laugh. That person that said what they did about blondes and engineering... what did you tell them?

Jokes make prejudice acceptable? Do you know what make prejudicial jokes possible? Language. Do you know what makes language possible? Intelligence. Perhaps we should not allow intelligence. That would get rid of the jokes about stereotypes, and might reduce the amount of prejudice in the world. Of course, I don't really believe any of that. I'm demonstrating the point that something should not go away simply because it facilitates something else. Especially when that something else (in this case, prejudice) would find another way to manifest. In a less general sense, joking can also act to enlighten. George Carlin was a master at this. Telling a joke is a good way to tell somebody something that they would otherwise not listen to. Probably most blonde jokes are not delivered in order to enlighten. However, an enlightened mind will see jokes for what they are. Stupid people will find a way to be prejudiced, and not telling jokes isn't going to stop them.

But they meant blonde and female and that's what hurts. Sorry for your pain. :rose: I was once told I lost a job because during the interview I had expressed no desire to go back to college and an assertion that I probably wouldn't go back. (I got that through the grapevine, not from the interviewer.) The job was a lab assistant job and required no skill that they weren't training people on. This was a very long time ago and I mostly know how to not screw up an interview (although I've screwed up some as recently as this last week). It's interesting how stinging a prejudice is when you get hit with it in the face. And when you try and explain others don't understand- sometimes even when they put a serious effort in- it is baffling. They think it is minor, or could be shrugged off. For me it was like getting a tiny taste of an ocean. A teaspoon full.

While I'm not sure how far they could shoot under warmer conditions, they did more than just pop open...all over the kitchen counter at room temperature.* On the other hand, the brains joke is obviously a joke, whether they could shoot that far or not. *What is room temperature? I mean, whatever the temperature is in the room, isn't that room temperature? ;P

Hmmm...certainly makes sense to me. Humans can't exist without categorizing. They categorize everything. It simply is not possible to treat every single aspect of life as though it has no characteristics in common with other aspects. That is even more true when dealing with other people. Unless someone eliminates humor entirely then any facet that is known to humanity is open to it. That includes categorization.

You know, I've been told to my face I can't be an engineer because I'm blonde. How about some black jokes then?

I am unclear as to your point. Are you suggesting that you can't be an engineer because that person said that? Or that you can't be an engineer because they hurt your feelings? Or perhaps you are stating that you are in fact an engineer and thus the person said that does not in fact know how to judge what makes an engineer? But then as an engineer you are letting the false opinion of someone who lacks the ability to make a realistic judgment to impact your outlook on life in some way? Myself I have been insulted in many ways in my life. And that includes being excluded based solely on such preconceived notions. However I chose to define my life by those the react positively to me and ignore those who have issues. Certainly in my experience the later group is at the very least lacking in social skills and often do not have the ability to accurately judge others anyways. So why give any more credence to an opinion that is probably worthless anyways?
