Would you take half your salary to work half the hours you currently do? I actually get jealous when I see government workers forced to take furlough days (unpaid time off). I'm going to clarify, my rationale is that it is nearly impossible to make the move to consulting or teaching while still being employed full-time, but I would never want to leave my position completely because of both the pay and experience it provides.

So technically, I have that all the time. Holidays suck unless I have something planned.

Need custom software developed? I do custom programming based primarily on MS tools with an emphasis on C# development and consulting. I also do Android Programming as I find it a refreshing break from the MS. "And they, since they Were not the one dead, turned to their affairs" -- Robert Frost

I would certainly divide my salary by half to work half the hours I currently do... but your proposition is crazy! ...unless I also apply for the part-time job that gets advertised as a result :)

Furlong? You mean furlough! :) Some people in my office had to take some furlough last year. A couple of days a month I think. I'd have liked to do that for a while. Couldn't do anything drastic like 1/2 the time though.

I work for a contractor and I couldn't do it instantly, if I talked to my manager and HR and said I only wanted to work part time they'd make it happen. Several of my cow-orkers are doing so. Probably the main delay would be needing to shuffle people around so that projects I'm working on don't suddenly find themselves understaffed.

I take it that money doesn't mean very much to you? Possibly nice to be that way but I've found the lack of it exacerbates problems that appear quite trivial when you have at least enough.

Have you ever tried asking people how much was enough? A (semi-?) recent study concluded that even millionaires usually "feel financially insecure, and would need about 1/3rd more to feel secure".

I don't borrow and I'm quite the anti-consumerist so it's not a big issue. I live like I did in college. For me it would be about having the time to pursue some ideas.

Seriously, if I were to look at what I started at 5-6 years ago, I am making 250% that right now. I wasn't starving then, I just don't buy shit constantly. I don't even have a flat-screen tv, my personal computer is at least 4 years old, I pay for my vehicles with cash, I have never gone on vacation that wasn't a roadtrip, etc. I don't like when people try to guilt me for saying many of us are paid fairly, but just have buying habits that are absurd.

No. Enough, for me, is being able to pay my bills and raise my family comfortably and without being in debt. I'm sure it will be different for everyone - it would reflect their needs but there are very few people who can really survive without any money and we call the ones that do 'homeless'.

No offense taken. Honestly I don't care what kind of families people have. Children, no children, adoption, whatever. I do feel that in some cases, like the Duggars[^], they may be selfish if they were to depend on government aid, but if not, it's their bodies. I also feel the government should never restrict what people choose to do to their bodies (reproducing counts).
