Jason Henderson wrote: It gives me a sick feeling in my stomach just reading about all of these people who may have come here for a better life but are being detained because of bureaucratic snafus. Well, there's a cause for you then. The INS is under-funded, under-staffed, over-worked, and has all the problems and inefficiencies you'd expect with a large bureacracy. And if that wasn't enough, they're being split up. Do a search for "immigrant" and "INS" on Google News & read some of the horror stories that pop up - there are problems aplenty.

Come March 2003, INS going to be split up into 2 pieces. Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration (BCI) and Bureau of Transportation and Border Security they both work under new "Department of Homeland Security" I don't know this creates more headaches or better responsibility.. :~ http://www.ins.gov/graphics/homeland.htm[^] Kant Sonork-100.28114 Don't  and Drive.

You need to learn how to read our news. Notice the terms "appear", "according to the paper", "some of those arrested", "reported case". All leave loopholes. KaЯl wrote: Aren't people applying for a permanent visa "protected" till they don't get an answer from the Administration ? AFAIK, if you're already in on a temporary visa and have applied for an adjustment of status (to permanent visa), you're ok. But I Am Not A Lawyer, and I Am Not An Immigration Official - nor do i know the circumstances. KaЯl wrote: What will be the destiny of the 16 years old boy ? May he be expelled, when his parents are legally living in the US ? I'm not at all sure how that works. AFAIK, children under 21 can get a visa immediately so long as their parents are US citizens... but i do not know if this requires both parents, or just one. I have to wonder what's going on in this situation however, as if he'd already been issued a green card you wouldn't think he'd even need to register. Once again, there may be special circumstances here. Keep in mind also (as i mentioned in a previous post): the INS is undergoing some fairly major restructuring at present, and operating under quite a bit of pressure on top of that. Never attribute to malice what can be adequately explained by stupidity or carelessness.

If they truly committed a crime, then they should go through whatever process is in place for handling an immigrant (presumably not one who has been naturalized) who has committed a crime. If this means that they are put in jail, well OK, although I would presume some sort of fari trial, rights, etc. However if all that happened was there visa expired - I think just throwing them in jail is a bit extreme - surely there are better ways to handle this? Also the article mentions numbers between 500-1000? I find it a bit difficult to beleive that most of these people are all criminals in need of immediate detention. And if they are, why the hell didn;t the system pick them up earlier? ¡El diablo está en mis pantalones! ¡Mire, mire!

I base my view on what it is *supposed* to be about by the rhetoric that I get fed through American controlled media, and by Americans every time I mention guns. But I'm not trying to bag America, like I said ( possibly not in this thread ), we're not really terribly different where I live.
